Responsibilities:

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the operational, financial, and administrative performance of the Division. In this role, the COO will: Demonstrate leadership to drive operational excellence throughout the organization. Develop and execute strategic, marketing, and financial plans, integrate new services/products, business systems, regulatory and compliance programs. Develop excellent relationships with all employees, including physicians, staff, the executive team, the Board, and members of other divisions of Sentara Healthcare. Focus on employee recruitment and retention, while achieving excellent work environment index and organizational climate scores. Develop, and modify as necessary, a business development plan to include organic market growth, evaluation and integration of acquisitions, as well as innovative opportunities in new healthcare markets. Develop and monitor organizational policy and practices in concert with other management personnel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the operational, financial and administrative performance of Sentara Norfolk General. In this role, the COO will:
  • Demonstrate leadership to drive operational excellence throughout the organization.
  • Develop and execute strategic, marketing, and financial plans, integrate new services/products, business systems, regulatory and compliance programs with specific oversight for bariatrics, orthopedic trauma, gynecology, ophthalmology, and solid organ transplant service lines.Develop excellent relationships with all employees, including physicians, staff, the executive team, Medical Staff Officers, and leadership team members of other divisions of Sentara Healthcare.Focus on workforce development plans, employee recruitment and retention while achieving excellent work environment index and organizational climate scores.Develop, and modify as necessary, a business development plan to include organic market growth, as well as innovative opportunities in new healthcare clinical services.Develop and monitor organizational policy and practices in concert with other management personnel.
  • Assure compliance with LCME, ACGME and CMS conditions of participation and accreditation criteria for higher education and graduate medical education approved residencies and fellowships as well as work in collaboration with Eastern Virginia Medical School to develop and implement clinical programs to support our community need and regional growth goals.
  • Provide leadership as it relates to planning; policy development; improvement of patient care delivery models; efficiency of multiple service lines; organization of hospital functions; assessment and evaluation of operational effectiveness; and responsibility for all outpatient services, to include 36-offsite hospital provider based locations and qualified pharmaceutical 340B IV Infusion centers (directly or through matrix reporting relationships).
  • Initiate and/or participate in development of marketing plans and strategies for both the hospital and system, and ensure the provision of high quality services attracting both physicians and patients.
  • Oversee the development and monitoring of current and projected capital and operating budgets, to include initiating corrective action(s) when substandard financial performance occurs.
  • Ensure maximization of efforts around cost control related to patient care through continuous evaluation of resource allocation(s); achieves, or exceeds, hospital financial plans.
  • Ensure hospital facilities allow for the implementation of programs and services; recommends facility and product line improvement(s), to include construction and/or renovation of structures and/or purchase of new equipment as appropriate. Manage a current master facility construction plan that includes a $200M capital project through 2020.
  • Maintain liaison relationships between hospital management and medical staff and other healthcare-related organizations in order to foster cooperative relationships and establish control systems for the most effective operation of Sentara Healthcare.
  • Represent Sentara to community, state, and national health agencies and groups.
  • Work to communicate and reinforce a vision for the hospital that emphasizes strong and effective physician relationships, city leadership relationships, the creation of new business opportunities, ensure dedication to customers, responsiveness to healthcare reform and changing reimbursement patterns
  • Communicate openly and effectively internally and externally with a wide variety of individuals to ensure that needs are being met and the reputation of the company is enhanced, while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Qualifications:

Education Level
Master's Level Degree

Experience
Minimum of five years of progressive administrative leadership experience in a teaching environment Eight years of experience is strongly preferred.

Prior experience in a highly matrixed healthcare organization with a complex organizational structure

Prior experience at an executive level managing hospital operations as a president, COO or VP of operations Minimum of five years of operational leadership experience Including leading cost containment initiatives, optimal utilization of resources and quality improvement efforts.

Prior experience leading large construction projects
Ideally will have overseen the construction of a wing, tower, new hospital and/or outpatient facility. Prior experience growing high-end destination clinical programs
