Supervises activities of a group of master combination inspectors to ensure construction complies with the Virginia Statewide Uniform Building Code. Implements work policies and inspection procedures that promote efficient and effective use of inspection staff. Reviews and updates current county and state code applications and interpretations. Develops and recommends code changes. Interacts with state and county agencies regarding design/construction problems, policies, codes, guidelines and/or ordinances. Develops curricula and conducts training in subject area related to inspections. Participates in emergency response operations or emergency calls on 24-hours basis, as needed. Position requires incumbent to operate a motor vehicle. Clearly communicates safety expectations to employees within work unit. Complies with county, agency and job specific training requirements, including but not limited to emergency management and safety-related courses. Under the supervision of the Chief of the Building Inspections Branch.

Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus five years of construction inspection experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license upon hire.
  • Due upon hire: four VDHCD Residential Inspector certifications (building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical)
  • Due within 18 months of hire: four VDHCD Commercial Inspector certifications (building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical)
OR
  • Due upon hire: Four VDHCD Commercial Inspector certifications (building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical)
  • Due within 18 months of hire: Four VDHCD Residential Inspector certifications (building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Appointee will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check, a Driving Record Check and a Pre-employment medical exam to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Code enforcement experience.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Leadership skills and related experience.
  • Certifications beyond those required for the position as issued by the International Code Council or Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to use computers and office equipment.
  • Ability to verbally communicate.
  • Ability to distinguish colors of wiring.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather.
  • Ability to climb step ladders and ladders up to 40 feet with required safety equipment.
  • Ability to crawl, crouch, stoop and work in uncomfortable conditions.
  • Ability to walk/traverse through and over various terrain.
  • Ability to climb multiple levels of stairs.
  • Ability to reach with arms extended above the head.
  • Ability to go up and down steep inclines.
  • Ability to walk and adequately maneuver in an outside/inside environment.
