Arlington County's Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development (CPHD) is seeking an experienced Plumbing Inspector to ensure that County's projects adhere to accepted standards and applicable codes and regulation. This position will assist in complex plumbing inspections of commercial and high-rise new construction.
Specific duties include:
- Conducting and documenting cross connection and code enforcement inspections for the county's new residential one- and two-family dwellings and low-rise construction projects;
- Inspecting plumbing and gas fitting installations during construction;
- Examining completed installations for workmanship and use of proper materials;
- Assisting and advising plumbers, contractors and others regarding plumbing regulations;
- Identifying and recommending solutions consistent with code requirements for field conditions which impact construction plans.
This Plumbing Inspector position will be filled at the Construction Codes Inspector I, II, or III level based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Once hired, the employee will receive training on materials, methodology and code requirements for residential and commercial high-rise inspections (see below under Additional Information for salary ranges).
Each Inspector receives cross training in all areas of code enforcement and may be responsible for providing technical direction in their specialty to other inspectors. Selection Criteria
Minimum: High School Diploma , GED or equivalent, plus;
Codes Inspector I: three years' trades specialty in plumbing or in general building construction experience and/or codes inspection or enforcement.
Codes Inspector II: three years' trades specialty in plumbing or general building construction experience with one year of experience in specialty area construction codes inspection or enforcement.
Codes Inspector III: three years of trades specialty in plumbing or general building construction experience with two years' experience in trades specialty area construction codes inspection or enforcement.
Substitution: Apprenticeship and/or trade school training related to specialty area may substitute for up to 1 year of general experience on a year-for-year basis.
Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
a) Experience applying and interpreting the Uniform Statewide Codes in plumbing;
b) Experience/certification in cross-connection devices inspection; and/or
c) Certification in a construction trade.
The employee must be certified in trade specialty within 12 months of hire and must progress through the Construction Codes Inspector series to Construction Codes Inspector III within three years of hire, completing all of the required training modules and passing the required examinations to become certified as the following:
- Combination Residential Inspector; and
- Commercial Building Inspector in trade specialty.
The salary range listed on this announcement is for a Construction Codes Inspector II.
The salary range for Construction Codes Inspector I is $46,300.80 - $70,699.20.
The salary range for Construction Codes Inspector II is $53,560.00 - $81,806.40.
The salary range for Construction Codes Inspector III is $57,262.40 - $87,505.60.
A standard County background check will be made on all candidates. Additional background checks may be necessary prior to admittance to secure federal facilities.
Positions require climbing ladders and going into trenches, walking up stairways, accessing small spaces and spending several hours a day standing and /or walking. Substantial time is spent outdoors or in buildings under construction/renovation in all types of weather conditions. Ability to work effectively with others is essential, although the employee normally works independently on field inspections, making decisions requiring the use of technical judgment and discretion.
Normal work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Occasionally inspections are scheduled outside of the normal work hours. Inspectors normally start and end the workday in the office, and are required to participate in meetings and task groups.
