Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

This position provides paralegal and intellectual property (IP) administrative support to the VCU Innovation Gateway. The position functions independently to identify, create and manage invention disclosures and patent filing. Manages and oversee VCU intellectual property portfolio ensuring timely response to office actions and conversion deadlines. Creates, inputs, and maintains records in IP docket management system. Interfaces with internal groups, VCU researchers and outside patent attorneys to provide and obtain information and documentation regarding IP matters. Coordinates and collects signatures for IP related prosecution documents (invention disclosures, assignments, declarations and Power of attorneys.) Responsible for handling highly confidential documents.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Knowledge of intellectual property management databases is essential
Excellent organizational, interpersonal skills, functional oversight and professional work ethics
Ability to work effectively and independently without supervision, and ability to multi-task

Ability to work Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Excellent customer service skills
Effective business writing skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
PC knowledge that includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Access
Some completed college courses or equivalent
Ability to work in a diverse environment required

Preferred Hiring Standards

Extensive experience with intellectual property management, patent and invention disclosures processing
Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
