Student Needs Assistants manage the healthcare concerns of students on Close Up’s programs based mostly in Washington, D.C. They work under the direction of Program Leaders and our medical care partners to ensure students get the medical and non-medical care and assistance they need to make a speedy recovery and rejoin our academic program.

Contract Dates & Schedule

This is a contract position from January 8, 2019 - June 14, 2019 with the opportunity for contract renewal. The Student Needs Assistant schedule is not a standard nine to five work week. Each week will mirror the program schedule to which you are assigned, typically a 48-hour week. Generally, this will be 8am-8pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and from 10am-10pm on Wednesdays, however, you may be asked to arrive earlier or stay later than those times. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are generally your days off, but there may be a few weeks where your hours are spread across Monday through Friday. There are also a number of weeks when we offer a 2-day New York City program that provides our Student Needs Assistant with the exciting opportunity to enjoy the city while working with students and receive an additional stipend.

  • Salary is $2,491 per month payable semi-monthly
  • All scheduled program meals and metro subsidy up to $120/month
  • Paid training including CPR/AED and First Aid Certification

Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall safety and well-being of students who need medical care; follow student program and be available to assist any students who may become ill.
  • Assist in transporting students, liaise with Georgetown Medical Professionals to triage students’ concerns, and deliver the palliative care directed by nurses and doctors to get the students quickly returned to the academic program. 
  • Escort students to a pharmacy for medicine, schedule doctor’s appointments and take students to the doctor, and return with students to the hotel for rest.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Ability to work flexible hours and work days
  • Ability to physically keep up with the intensity of the program schedule, hopping on and off buses throughout the day, and coordinating the movement of students on all program activities in the Washington, D.C. area and other program locations. 
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer
  • Willing to undergo a criminal background check prior to employment

Other qualifications 

  • Passion for working with diverse students in grades 6-12
  • Exhibit patience, understanding, approachability, and flexibility to comfort ill students while away from home
