  • To qualify for this position, all applicants must meet the following basic requirement for the 0601 series:

    Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of a Histotechnologist (i.e. clinical biology, microbiology, physiology, pre-med, medical lab technology, etc.) NOTE: A transcript must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Applications submitted without this information will not be considered. ~AND~

    In addition to the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position at the GS-9 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

    Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Histotechnologist. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to providing technical support in making clinical diagnosis of human tissue specimens; performing complex histologic procedures and utilizing proper techniques; performing accessions and labeling of specimens; performing sectioning of paraffin tissue blocks; evaluating test results; calibrating and operating laboratory instruments; performing special pathology laboratory procedures (i.e., staining); preparing specimens for analysis; etc. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~

    Education: Successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in an academic field related to health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the position of Histotechnologist. This education must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Transcripts are required with your application. ~OR~

    Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of this position (as described above). Transcripts are required with your application.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires manual dexterity, visual acuity, color vision, regular and recurring physical exertion such as the use of a motorized microtome or cryostat, climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time, lifting of five gallon reagent containers and other moderately heavy supplies and equipment; a high degree of tolerance and ability to work under stress which at times can be irregular and sometimes constant. Additionally the demand for accuracy and timeliness in reporting results to pathologists responsible for patient care is an ever-present responsibility and a constant concern.

    The environment is constantly associated with potentially highly infectious material, e.g. AIDS, TB, CJD, Legionella, and hepatitis. Standard precautions and use of personal protective equipment must be taken.

    Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
