Research Assistant/Laboratory Technician (Part-Time)
The George Mason University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic person for a laboratory technician/research assistant position to work on a nanobiotechnology project to discover new antiviral biomolecules. This project is part of a multidisciplinary effort involving polymer chemistry, biochemistry, proteomics, virology and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will have a B.S. or M.S. degree in chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline, preferably with experience in the areas of polymer chemistry and biochemistry/molecular biology. Experience with mass spectrometry would be advantageous. Responsibilities: The primary focus of this position is will be research, with some lab management responsibilities. The research assistant will work closely with the principal investigator and graduate students on the project. This position is responsible for performing tasks and experiments in support of ongoing proteomic/peptidomic technology and discovery-related scientific investigations.
Required Qualifications: * BS or MS degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a highly related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience; * High level of initiative and ability to work productively with limited supervision; * Willingness to work at BSL2; * Attention to detail in laboratory tasks as well as administrative tasks; * Excellent punctuality, organization, and time management skills; * Ability to work under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor; * Ability to read and comprehend relevant scientific literature; * Ability to efficiently multitask; * Flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and shift priorities simultaneously; * Strong interpersonal skills; * Ability to work as an effective team member; and * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong computer aptitude, including experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications: * Demonstrated experience with the use of LC-MS and LC-MS/MS is desired; * Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience in an independent research project; * Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., use of MATLAB or R for data analysis.); * Demonstrated experience working with Excel macros and or Python scripting language; and * Demonstrated hands-on experience with mass spectrometry and proteomics data analysis software.
