Journal Outreach Strategist - Transportation Research Board
The dissemination of research is a rapidly evolving ecosystem, and the Transportation Research Board is seeking an Journal Outreach Strategist to help position its flagship journal, the Transportation Research Record (TRR), at the forefront of publishing innovation. Transportation is a multi-disciplinary, cross-cutting field, and the Journal Outreach Strategist will need to identify and leverage key intersections to ensure our content reaches the widest and most appropriate audience.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Managing Editor to identify opportunities for the TRR to engage with its key constituents, which include early career investigators, journal reviewers, conference organizers, field practitioners, transportation agencies, and volunteer stakeholders. The Outreach Strategist will develop and implement projects of relevance to these communities, including, but not limited to, campus and conference outreach, journal clubs, career development, online communities, workshops at the TRB Annual Meeting, etc. In addition, the candidate would be expected to:
•\tPrepare reports and materials to present to governance, at conferences, and internally
•\tAnalyze industry trends and journal usage data and formulate recommendations for optimizing stakeholder engagement
•\tIdentify emerging area of research and attend conferences to attract the best papers
•\tWork with our publisher's marketing team to reach our target audiences
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Conceives of and manages extracurricular publishing projects for the Transportation Research Record. The projects will provide tangible value to journal stakeholders, including authors, reviewers, and editorial personnel. Responsible for moving projects through all stages by interfacing with Senior Program Officers, Publisher Staff, editors, vendors, and the like to ensure the final product meets all required specifications. Provides leadership and mentors authors, reviewers, and volunteers. Trains and develops stakeholders to successfully perform current responsibilities and prepare for future roles. Forms effective teams and leverages existing skillsets. Serves as first and continuing point of contact for authors or volunteers associated with assigned projects. Coordinates all parties to plan and complete assigned projects. Stages coordination meetings with staff officers to plan for production and rollout. Manages project workflow from original concept to delivery of product. Prepares and presents reports to Managing Editor, Advisory Board, and others regarding project uptake and success. Addresses questions and researches topics as needed. Ensures all communication and outreach quality control is comprehensive and consistent with NAS guidelines. Independently write and produce journal materials, including author profiles and issue overviews. May lead special editorial and publishing projects and initiatives.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of academic peer review and publishing processes and the ability to anticipate trends and weaknesses in these fields. Familiarity with scholarly conferences and proceedings. Strong public outreach skills in presentation, networking, and collaborative forums. Awareness of campus activities and academic sensitivities, particularly in China.
Ability to work independently and solve problems of substantial variety and complexity. Ability to supervise and mentor staff and volunteers. Project management skills, including planning, budgeting, delegating tasks to freelancers, and successfully completing projects according to established parameters of budget, schedule, and physical specifications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of stakeholders. Foreign language proficiency is a plus. Digital proficiency a must, including data analytics.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, Transportation Planning or Engineering, or related field, or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum Experience: Four years of related professional experience.
Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to travel and attend conferences.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Managing Editor. General direction is provided.
Work Environment: Office environment with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site conferences, universities, and lectures. Full attendance at the TRB Annual Meeting each January. Some foreign travel may be required.
