The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is seeking an experienced professional to serve as Instructional Designer within the Office of Transformational Learning. One of 13 schools and colleges located on the University of Maryland, College Park campus, the Smith School is a recognized leader in management research and education for the global economy. The Instructional Designer works collaboratively with faculty and staff to develop courses that challenge students to assess complex business problems and deliver innovative solutions. As a member of a dynamic and highly skilled instructional design team, this individual is primarily charged with coaching faculty on strategies for integrating interactive and engaging content, both synchronously and asynchronously. This position will provide faculty with group and one-on-one instructional design assistance including building experiential learning opportunities in conjunction with external business partners. We are looking for a passionate, highly creative individual who can motivate and coax instructors to explore new instructional design approaches for developing effective learning experiences for our students.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree plus significant coursework in education, instructional media or related field. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in instructional design or instructional technology support. Extremely well versed in application of design methodologies including but not limited to: ADDIE model, SAM, backward design, e-learning blueprint, design thinking, and interactive learning experiences. Experience in designing authentic assessments and engaging course content. Ability to be creative, flexible, and innovative in course design. Highly proficient computer skills to include MS Office Suite and learning management systems. Ability to provide instructional, curriculum and technical design consulting services to subject matter experts (faculty).
Experience in collaborating with teams and clients to manage expectations. Excellent English-language verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, superior organizational skills, self- direction, and motivation a must. Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, work independently, and meet strict deadlines.
Preferences: Master’s degree in instructional design, distance education, or instructional technology. Experience building business cases in a higher education environment preferred. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Training in design, psychology, and data science will be beneficial but not necessary; knowledge of experiential and project based learning models and frameworks. Knowledge of Canvas learning management system will be beneficial but not necessary; proficient in HTML, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro. Demonstrated expertise in using authoring tools such as Captivate and Storyline to create sophisticated adaptive learning content; experience using and supporting a wide variety of podcast, animation, and multimedia development tools such as Audacity, Camtasia, Kaltura, SlideShare, PowToon, and streaming services. Knowledge of instructional software such as TurningPoint, Respondus, Panopto, etc. Demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, customer support, data analysis, and time management; driven by standards of excellence and committed to continuous improvement; ability to foster faculty enthusiasm for and engagement in the use of innovative technologies for teaching.
The salary for this position will be in the high $60’s to low $70’s. The University also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 22 Days Annual Leave; 15 Days Sick Leave; 3 Days Personal Leave; 15 Paid Holidays; Tuition Remission; Health, Dental, Vision and Prescription coverage.
