    Basic Requirements:
    Degree: in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.

    The GS-09 salary range starts at $56,233.00 per year. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.  In addition to the above Basic Requirements, to qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or higher in the Federal service; and/or 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. 

    Specialized experience is: Specialized experience is experience assisting members in the performance of a broad spectrum of technical and analytical duties; assisting senior Operations Research Analyst apply advanced mathematical and other scientific management analysis techniques to solve portions of difficult and complex projects. 

    The GS-11 salary range starts at $68,036.00 per year. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.  In addition to the above Basic Requirements, to qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level or higher in the Federal service; and/or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. 

    Specialized experience is: Specialized experience is experience participating in the analysis and evaluation of data, and organizational and operational interrelationships; assisting staff members in the performance of a broad spectrum of technical and analytical duties; and assisting senior Operations Research Analysts apply advanced mathematical and other scientific management analysis techniques to solve portions of difficult and complex projects.

    The GS-12 salary range starts at $81,548.00 per year. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.  In addition to the above Basic Requirements, to qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or higher in the Federal service.

    Specialized experience is: Specialized experience is experience participating in the analysis and evaluation of data, organizational and operational interrelationships; providing a quantitative basis for reaching sound managerial business decisions; design, development or adaptation of statistical, technological and managerial methods, models and techniques; conducting portions of moderately complex operations research and economic analysis under the direction of a project leader.

    We will use a method called Category Rating to assess your application.  Here’s how it will work:

    • You will be scored on the questions you answer during the application process, which will measure your possession of the following competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    At the GS-09:

    1. Knowledge of established methods and techniques used in operations research studies to recommend those suitable for producing findings and evaluations.
    2. Knowledge of computer skills required for analytical processing and data manipulation.
    3. Skill in written and oral communication sufficient to present information on the scope, methods and results of studies.

    At the GS-11:

    1. Knowledge of a wide range of methods and techniques used in operations research studies to recommend those suitable for producing explicit findings and discriminating evaluations.
    2. Knowledge of quantitative analysis and operations research requiring the application of such techniques as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, linear and nonlinear programming, simulation, decision theory, and probability theory are necessary for accomplishing operations research studies.
    3. Skill in written and oral communications including presentation techniques in order to present study findings and recommendations to high level organization and field site management officials.

    At the GS-12:

    1. Knowledge of research techniques to conduct work involved in the performance of operations research studies in support of FAS, GSA processes and operations.
    2. Knowledge of quantitative analysis and operations research requiring the application of such techniques as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, linear and nonlinear programming, simulation, decision theory, and probability theory are necessary for accomplishing operations research studies.
    3. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers, information sources and project team members.
    • Your answers to the questions will be used to place you in one of three categories:  Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
    • We will verify your answers to the questions in your resume.  If your resume doesn’t support your answers, we may lower your score, which could place you in a lower category.
    • Within each category, veterans will receive selection priority over non-veterans.

    If you are eligible under Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan or GSA’s Career Transition Assistance Plan(ICTAP/CTAP), you must receive a score of 85 or higher to receive priority.
