THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED FOR THE PURPOSE OF FILLING CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS, SHIFTS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.
ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to the Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training program in bronze restoration and painting of interior and exterior surfaces and equipment.
Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a professional painter or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years.
Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this class.
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.
Ability to distinguish basic colors for painting and safety identification.
This is bronze metal restoration/refinishing and various types of surface painting work. An employee in this class is responsible for restoring, refinishing, and painting surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, synthetics, concrete and any surfaces requiring finishing by brush, roller and spray guns using paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, epoxy resin, teflon and chemicals. The work requires an understanding of WMATA maintenance procedures and practices, chemical solution preparation, hazardous waste disposal, surface properties, the materials, parts, tools and equipment associated with WMATA facilities.
Employees are assigned elementary surface refinishing work in WMATA facilities. Employees are expected to gain familiarity with and to develop skills required to perform surface finishing. Employees receive instructions and close supervision on new assignments, while routine assignments are performed independently. Employee refers technical or procedural matters to a supervisor for decision or clarification. Work is reviewed and verified upon completion to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by a Supervisor, Craft Crew.
Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.
Performs preparation of bronze finishes for refinishing through the removal of existing finishes, scratches, stains or discolorations. Applies refinishing chemicals at the prescribed ratio and methods established by manufacturing or industry standards in accordance with WMATA architectural finish standards.
Tints, tones, matches and blends coating materials, adds various agents and combines mixtures to get the colors, texture, consistency and drying of area. Insures that the match, decorative appearance, and level of the thickness meet finish requirements.
Prepares wood, metal, drywall and other surfaces by scraping, sanding, applying chemicals and washing surfaces to remove cracked, flaking or accumulated paint, rust or surface residues. Shapes and levels various surfaces with metal, synthetic resins, plastics and patching compounds to insure that the proper texture and smoothness of the surface is attained.
Paints interior and exterior surfaces of bus and rail facilities, administrative offices, equipment, rooms, etc. Paints in accordance with established standards and other guidelines, utilizes power spray equipment and machinery as required, in addition to brushes, roller, viscosity testers, graining devices, wet and thickness gauges, etc.
Performs layout as designed and paints stripes and other pavement markings on parking lots and roadways on Authority property throughout the system.
Sets up and works from scaffolding, ladders and other high reach or specialized equipment as required in assigned work.
Maintains and makes minor repairs on spray equipment as required.
Completes required documentation and reports pertaining to painting of interior and exterior facilities, equipment and surfaces by using the proper forms, tags or daily activity records; prepares requisitions for parts from supply storerooms.
Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; assists co-workers in higher classifications in their assignments or provides job specific training to co-workers in lower classifications.
Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies or incidents such as emergency snow removal.
Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.
Work variable shifts, days and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union contract.
Performs all other related duties as required.
