Associate Counsel for Advancement and Financial Affairs - Office of General Counsel

The Associate Counsel for Advancement and Financial Affairs will provide legal services to the University community, with a particular focus on philanthropic fundraising and financial matters.  This is a new position in the Office of General Counsel and will report to the University Counsel responsible for these areas of work. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Counsels and advises the Office of Advancement, Law Center Advancement and academic units engaged in fundraising on a wide range of fundraising and stewardship matters.  Counsels on proposed giving opportunities (including planned gifts and gifts of complex assets); reviews, drafts and negotiates gift agreements; reviews and counsels on philanthropic grant agreements and other gifts from corporations and foundations; provides guidance regarding stewardship of existing gifts and compliance with gift agreements; and advises on gift-related policies. 
  • Counsels and advises the Division of Financial Affairs and others on a wide range of financial matters, including the long-term debt portfolio, lines of credit, letters of credit and treasury management.  Advises on, reviews documents relating to and conducts due diligence for debt-related and other complex financial transactions.  Coordinates with outside tax counsel to obtain advice on tax issues on as as-needed basis. 


  • Juris Doctorate
  • D.C. bar membership (or immediate eligibility for membership)
  • Five to ten years of experience as a corporate attorney, including substantive experience in general corporate law at a large law firm, and a demonstrated ability to handle complex transactional matters independently.
