Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

- Agencies may hire Interns on a temporary basis for up to one year for an initial period, or for an indefinite period, to complete the educational requirement.
- Interns may work either part- or full-time.
- Each agency must sign a Participant Agreement with the Intern that sets forth the expectations for the internship.
- Intern's job will be related to the Intern's academic career goals or field of study.
Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
- Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
- Complete their degree or certificate requirements
- Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
- Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
- Perform their job successfully.
This is an excepted service, developmental appointment under the OIG Pathways Internship Program. After the Intern successfully completes the developmental program and meets the OPM Qualification Standards for an Investigative Analyst, OIG may non-competitively convert the Intern to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service.
Note: Conversion is not guaranteed and is based on the needs of OIG. At the agency's discretion, this position may allow for promotion eligibility. Upon conversion, the Investigative Analyst GS-1805 has position has promotion potential to the GS-13 grade level. This position may have flexibility for a full-time work schedule.

Internship Eligibility Requirements:
Individuals accepted for enrollment (must provide an acceptance letter from the academic institution on letterhead and provide proof of student confirming acceptance) or students enrolled (you must provide unofficial academic transcripts) from an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.
To qualify for the GS-04 grade level, the applicant must have graduated from high school and successfully completed at least two years of academic education above the high school level; OR the applicant must have at least one year of progressively general experience. General experience is any type of work that displays the ability to perform the work of the position as demonstrated through assisting in research, data collection, and studies, assisted in preparing or reviewing written memorandums; OR the applicant may qualify based on a combination of general experience and education.
Note: One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks. To determine if you qualify based on a combination of education and experience, first determine your education as a percentage (e.g., 30 semester hours divided by 60 equals 50%); then determine your experience as a percentage (e.g., 6 months general experience divided by 12 equals 50%); finally, add the two percentages and if the total equals 100% or more, you qualify (e.g., 50% + 50% = 100%).
To qualify for the GS-05 grade level, the applicant must have completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or equivalent degree; or a Bachelor's degree; OR applicants may qualify based on having 3 years of progressively general experience, 1 year of which was equivalent to at least a GS-4 as described above. Progressively general experience is any type of work that displays the ability to perform the work of the position as demonstrated through analyzing problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; plan and organize work; and communicate effectively orally and in writing; OR the applicant may qualify based on a combination of education and general experience for the GS-05 grade level.
