The Senior Researcher will support the Behavioral Health Services Information System (BHSIS) under contract with the US Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This position will work closely with other researchers to design and implement research studies as well as develop and analyze large data sets using statistical software. The Senior Researcher will coordinate closely with team members and clients in support of projects and work under tight deadlines to fulfill client requests.

In addition, the Senior Researcher will also be responsible for the following:

  • Producing data reports and analytic/public use files
  • Developing processes to de-identify and provide data confidentiality
  • Assisting with client account management to understand needs, manage expectations, and build long term relationships (including business development activities)
  • Using SAS and/or other statistical software to produce excel tables and respond to ad hoc data requests
  • Designing, executing, and interpreting research studies
  • Preparing written research reports and articles summarizing research findings
  • Conducting univariate and multivariate statistical analyses
  • Completing presentations, technical reports, and executive summaries
  • Conducting quality control on the work of self and others in the research team
  • Authoring reports, memos, technical assistance tools, issue briefs, webinar presentations, and journal manuscripts

 Education and Experience:

  • Masters or doctoral degree or equivalent experience in public health, public policy, data science, statistics, demography, economics, behavioral or social sciences, or other relevant discipline
  • A minimum of five years of academic or professional research experience, post graduate education completion
  • Presented at one or two scientific/research conferences 
  • Authored a minimum of two peer-reviewed publications

 Other Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated record of technical and business writing
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work effectively, independently, and as a team member
  • Demonstrated expertise in applied research including gleaning meaningful insights from large-scale data sets
  • High level of proficiency in advanced SAS programming, MS Excel and other MS Office applications. Proficiency with other statistical analysis software will also be considered.
  • Bring creative ideas to business development and actively participate in submitting proposals and obtaining new projects
  • Prior experience in the substance abuse and/or mental health field (preferred but not required)
