CPB is currently seeking to hire a Vice President, Journalism (Level 99). Salary $120,000 – $140,000. This position reports directly to the SVP, Journalism and Radio.
Works with the SVP of Journalism and Radio to develop, plan, initiate, and administer grant initiatives to support journalism-related projects throughout the public media system with the ultimate goal of increasing capacity, collaboration, scale, and reach in public media journalism as well as upholding public media’s commitment to maintining the highest editorial standards. The VP, Journalism will ensure the department’s activities are closely coordinated with other CPB departments, grant initiatives are effectively managed, and CPB management is appropriately informed of department activities. Specifically, the VP will help to analyze system and audience needs in journalism and ensure that journalism initiatives align with these needs. Further, the VP will monitor trends in public media, non-profit, and for-profit journalism; collect and maintain data about the reach and impact of public media journalism; and identify opportunities for innovation and audience engagement. This individual will use effective management and administative skills to ensure that CPB grant programs fulfill their intended purpose.
• Assists the SVP of Journalism and Radio in setting priorities for grant funding and specific initiatives consistent with CPB Goals and Objectives and annual strategic/business plans.
• Manages the research and business planning, synthesizing and framing information generated through discussion and analysis into proposed strategies and action steps that guide the development and implementation of department projects and, assesses project and policy outcomes through the development and use of key performance indicators (KPIs), and tracking progress against strategic goals.
• Working with the SVP, Journalism and Radio, oversees the department’s portfolio of journalism-related grant projects from initial concept through contracting, administration, and grant close-out. Helps to negotiate agreements including timelines, project budgets, and assessment of project or grant initiative impact and effectiveness.
• Ensures that journalism grants are appropriately documented and administered, that projects are completed on-time and on-budget, that company information systems are kept up-to-date. Oversees the work of staff in guiding complex, high profile projects.
• Manages Journalism department communications internally and externally, serving as a primary resource for providing information for talking points, press releases; developing presentations, board reports, and other documents that effectively capture the activities and strategic priorities of CPB and the department.
• Helps develop journalism-related conferences and events. This may include directly organizing or managing staff to plan and produce system consultations, proposal review panels, and events at system and public meetings.
• Coordinates with colleagues in other CPB departments and management offices, including the Office of the COO. Develops and maintains effective relationships with colleagues across public media including reporters, editors, producers, networks, stations, and industry organizations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media, or related field.
• Minimum of seven years of journalism and executive management experience at a leading local and/or national news organization.
• Excellent writing skills.

• Demonstrated ability to formulate initiatives and projects and bring them to successful conclusion.

• Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating collaborations or building alliances.
• Experience as a reporter/editor in commercial media.
• Experience with cross platform (TV, radio, digital media) journalism production.
• Experience with project management, including project planning, budgeting and grant management either as a grant-maker or a grant recipient in a material relationship with the grant funder.
• Familiarity with public media journalism.
• Background in grant writing, fundraising, marketing or consulting.
