Research Assistant Professor
The George Mason University, Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM), within the College of Science, invites well-qualified candidates with demonstrated expertise in proteomics, metabolomics, and biochemistry to apply for a Research Assistant Professor position. Responsibilities: This junior faculty position will:
- Perform research involving 3D structural analysis of protein-protein interaction domains relevant to therapeutic intervention using LC-tandem mass spectrometry, FIB Scanning Electron Microscopy, NMR, affinity dye chemistry, metabolite identification and quantification, chromatography, immunoblotting/immunoprecipitation, microscopy, and data analysis;
- Perform research using a unique combination of protein structural chemistry analysis methods combined with genomic, metabolomic, microbiology, cell biology, and proteomic skill sets for integrating molecular analysis in translational research;
- Oversee a nanoscale imaging core facility utilizing NMR, X-Ray diffraction, Mass Spectrometry, Transmission EM and Scanning Electron Microscopy; and
- Mentor and teach graduate students, undergraduate students, and student research interns. Communicate research progress to colleagues, present research at conferences, and write grant proposals and articles for publication.
The initial appointment for this position will be two years and is eligible for renewal dependent upon satisfactory performance and continuation of funding. Most of the work will be performed at the George Mason Universitys Science and Technology campus in Manassas, Va. Some local travel to NIH, local collaborating universities, high schools, and community colleges, may be required.
Required Qualifications: Considering the interdisciplinary nature of the research group and the projects that the candidate will work on, the position requires an individual who has demonstrated experience across multiple disciplines. Candidates should have an interest in designing research projects for elucidating molecular structure and function of interacting disease related molecules. Examples of the skills that will be used in this work include: microbiology, cell biology, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, laser capture microdissection, reverse phase protein microarrays, electrophoresis, electron microscopy, structural biology, DNA sequence analysis, PCR, ELISA, western blotting, NMR, X-Ray crystallography, and microfabrication.
Specific required qualifications include:
- Ph.D. in biochemistry, biological science, or a related field;
- Demonstrated successful writing of grant applications that are funded;
- Demonstrated capability for conducting independent, creative and interdisciplinary research;
- Hands-on experience using mass spectrometry, NMR, scanning electron microscopy, cryo- transmission electron microscopy, protein x-ray crystallography, and micro- or nanofabrication of materials;
- Experience in metabolite identification and quantification, protein expression and purification, and elucidation of protein-protein interactions using protein tagging and mass spectrometry;
- Experience in designing technologies to isolate and characterize single cells from tissue
- Synthesis, purification and characterization of affinity dye chemistry, including chromatography and NMR elucidation of dye molecular structures;
- Teaching experience at the graduate, undergraduate, or high school level;
- Proficiency in the use of personal computer, word-processing applications, automation of data analysis and spreadsheet applications with demonstrated scientific writing ability; and
- Excellent communication skills in oral and written English.
- Documented experience or peer-reviewed publications in drug target identification, molecular drug design, and drug development;
- Documented experience in organic affinity dye structural and binding characterization;
- Documented experience using FIB-SEM, TEM, or NMR for nanoscale characterization of nanostructures, molecules, and exosomes; and
- Documented grant funding in proteomics or molecular biology.
