Engineering Degree in a related Civil Engineering field and successful completion of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved Comprehensive Bridge Safety Inspection Training course within 1 year of employment
- In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, a high school graduate or a GED with a minimum of 4 years of experience in structural construction, maintenance or inspections will be considered and successful completion of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved Comprehensive Bridge Safety Inspection Training course.
One (1) year of experience in structural construction, maintenance or inspections.
Must successfully complete WMATA’s RWP (Roadway Worker Protection) and other required core training courses.
- Current valid Driver’s license. Must also be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class “B” with no restrictions for Air Brakes within one year from date of hire.
Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
The Structural Evaluation Technician A is responsible for inspections, evaluation and assessment of bridges, aerials, tunnels, stations, retaining structures, parking structures and other WMATA structures.
Conduct in-depth visual and mechanical inspections of structures such as bridges, aerials, tunnels, stations, retaining structures, and parking structures as well as other structural assets to identify all structural damage, deterioration, defects, and deficiencies that would present a safety hazard or maintenance concern
Prepare inspection reports to document findings.
Perform a variety of calculations and computations.
Follows pre-determined work routines with Mechanic AA’s or Lead personnel.
Makes sketches and takes photographs to document conditions and use as aides to resolve structural issues.
Selects and uses correct tools and test equipment such as, crack monitors and borescopes and analyzes, evaluates and interprets test results.
Performs non-destructive tests on structures to ascertain the reliability of materials such as concrete and steel and to measure the size of reinforcing bars.
Writes daily work reports of activities performed.
Works with higher grade mechanics to follow existing inspection schedules and complete all inspections in a timely manner.
Interprets schematic and layout diagram, operation manuals, and manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Reads and understands structural blue prints and interpret drawings to associate conditions of existing structures.
Assist structural maintenance personnel when required. Such duties will include preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance and repair work to bridges, aerials, tunnels and other structures using proper tools and equipment.
Work during inclement weather and perform snow removal activities.
