Research Assistant Professor, Department of Bioengineering

The George Mason University Department of Bioengineering, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to contribute to ongoing cutting-edge neuroinformatics research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under the BRAIN initiative. Responsibilities: The successful applicant will join the Ascoli Lab in the Center for Neural Informatics, Structures, and Plasticity (CN3) to lead the NeuroMorpho.Org information technology (IT) infrastructure. CN3 is an interdisciplinary, energetic, and creative research group in the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study of the main Fairfax campus in northern Virginia (20 miles west of Washington DC). NeuroMorpho.Org is a free, public, centralized repository of neuronal digital reconstructions supported by NIH, Department of Defense, Keck Foundation, Wellcome-Burroughs Trust, and National Science Foundation. The project is a powerful resource for the computational and experimental neuroscience communities, with millions of downloads and data usage in over 1400 independent publications since launching in 2006. The August, 2018 release (version 7.5) contains over 1.5 million internal data files pertaining to nearly 100,000 neuronal reconstructions contributed by 500 laboratories worldwide.

The Research Assistant Professor will assume responsibility of the NeuroMorpho.Org IT continuous maintenance, development, and management, including design of new solutions to enhance the performance of existing software and hardware. The incumbent will also be responsible for tuning and implementing the next generation support for Big Data handling of digital neuronal reconstructions. The position entails tight collaborations with faculty and trainees in CN3, the Bioengineering, department, and the Neuroscience program, in addition to continuous interactions with the international research community. The successful applicant will work directly with the CN3 director (Dr. Ascoli) and will have unlimited access to dedicated supercomputer and server facilities, flexible working schedule, salary based on the NIH postdoctoral scale, and state employee benefits.

Required Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned PhD, by the start date of the position, in one of the following disciplines: computer science, software engineering, information systems, bioengineering, applied mathematics, neuroscience, physics, data science, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications: Any and all of the following characteristics are especially desired: proficiency in Java, C/C++, Python, R, Matlab, and Shell scripting; experience with Unix/Linux server administration; SQL & NoSQL databases design and system operation; web technologies and API (micro) services; content management & collaborative platforms; big-data & cloud computing analytical tools; task analysis automation; knowledge in project management (PMP or similar); and understanding of neuroscience data. It is preferred that applicants have an earned PhD at the time of application submission.
