The Kennedy Center is the nation's performing arts center and living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Located on the banks of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., the Center presents more than 2,000 performances each year across all genres, and is also home to artistic affiliates Washington National Opera and National Symphony Orchestra. With the arrival of new NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda in September 2017, interest and excitement surrounding the Orchestra have never been higher. Maestro Noseda's charisma and dynamic leadership promise to usher in a new era of artistic acclaim and accomplishment—from performances in the Concert Hall and in the community, to new initiatives such as robust domestic and international touring and new media and recordings.

The NSO Development team seeks a highly motivated and creative individual to join our team in support of the NSO's growing portfolio of artistic initiatives. The Assistant Manager, Special Projects and Touring works with the Manager, NSO Corporate and Foundation Relations in the planning, coordination, and execution of fundraising campaigns in conjunction with the NSO's international and domestic touring and special projects such as recording and new media initiatives, as well as the annual NSO Season Opening Gala, with a goal of generating between $2.5 million and $3.5 million in annual contributed income. The Assistant Manager will organize and administer prospect research and cultivation strategies, targeted solicitation plans, and benefit fulfillment for new and current corporate, foundation, government, and individual donors. The incumbent also collaborates extensively with donors as well as colleagues in departments throughout the Center.

The Assistant Manager possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills; manages his/her time efficiently and independently; anticipates the needs of the Manager, along with the NSO's Chief Development Officer; and takes proactive initiative to advance campaign strategies and goals. This position will share management responsibilities of a NSO Corporate and Foundation Relations Assistant, and will occasionally manage a NSO Development intern.

Duties and Responsibilities:

50% Identify, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward current and prospective donors/sponsors for NSO touring and special projects, working with Manager of NSO Corporate & Foundation Relations, NSO Chief Development Officer, NSO Executive Director, Kennedy Center Senior Vice President of Development, and other Center staff where appropriate; maintain direct contact with current and prospective donors/sponsors via telephone and personal visitation.

30% Prepare individually tailored presentations for corporate, foundation, government, and individual solicitations; draft and edit proposals of varying length and complexity; develop project budgets in formats suitable for prospects, as appropriate; create and implement project-specific recognition and hospitality packages.

20% Serve as a primary point-of-contact for internal and external constituents for the NSO Season Opening Gala, including liaising with NSO Season Opening Gala Chairs; managing the creation and editing of meeting and event materials; identifying, researching, and soliciting corporate and individual prospects based on each year's unique Gala theme and Chairs; and coordinating all Gala-related communication to confirmed and potential attendees.


  • Minimum two to four years Fundraising and Development experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Working knowledge of the performing arts is preferred.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required

  • Strong communication skills are imperative, as are interpersonal skills and organizational skills.
  • The candidate must have an appreciation of the Kennedy Center's and National Symphony Orchestra's mission, be knowledgeable about a wide variety of performing arts programs, and be familiar with a broad base of donors and fundraising/funding prospects including their history and involvement with the Center, NSO, and WNO.
  • A professional and cordial demeanor, tact, and diplomacy are imperative as the incumbent is regularly in contact with people at all levels of society and business including Kennedy Center leadership, high level volunteers, major donors and prospects, and other Center personnel.
  • Creativity and an excellent command of the English language are critical to identifying funding sources, matching their interests to projects, and communicating persuasively, both in person and in writing, the need for funding.
  • The candidate must have the ability and confidence to work without close supervision, to foresee fundraising/development needs, and to proactively generate work for this position as well as an Assistant and an intern.
  • Experience with Tessitura is ideal.
