Human Resources Project Manager, College of Science

The George Mason University College of Science (COS) invites well-qualified candidates to apply for our new Human Resources Project Manager position. Duties: The COS Human Resources Project Manager will be responsible for working on and managing a wide variety of HR projects such as onboarding and faculty/staff engagement, and new initiatives in faculty/staff development. This position will also be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining HR management systems and controls in support of those projects; performing HR data analysis and reporting; and managing the documentation of the college’s HR processes. The portfolio of projects managed will continue to grow and diversify as new needs are identified. This position will complement the existing COS HR staff by designing, integrating, and maintaining the systems within which all of the college’s local HR admins work. Duties for this position will be performed at both the Science & Technology campus (Prince William County) and the Fairfax campus. Occasional travel to other GMU sites may be required.

HR Project Management: The primary purpose of the position and majority of the work is to serve as Project Manager and principle staff support for a wide variety of Human-Resources related projects. Projects will span across the full employee life cycle including areas such as Faculty and Staff Engagement (recruitment, onboarding, career progression, skills development, well-being, reward & recognition, and retention); Diversity (staffing, climate, and leadership); and Off-boarding (exit interviews, separation checklists).

HR Management Systems and Controls: The incumbent will also develop, utilize, and maintain systems and controls for tracking HR-related processes and project initiatives. Examples include databases to track training requirements, waivers, and employment records for the purposes of compliance, planning, and reporting. The incumbent will be responsible for oversight of the college’s HR data integrity and create, maintain, and distribute procedures to document the college’s HR processes.

Data Analysis and Reporting: The selected finalist will also create organizational charts for the College, Departments, and Research Centers and distribute them both to the units and to the web; prepare salary data and other reports for use by senior college administrators in allocation planning; track the completion of required training and onboarding efforts; and prepare responses to requests for information from senior leadership of the college.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to human resources or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge of general HR principles;
  • Knowledge of relational databases and data mining;
  • Significant experience using and manipulating relational databases (e.g. Microsoft Access, Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, or similar);
  • Expert Level MS Excel spreadsheet experience;
  • Sophisticated communication and presentation skills (both oral and written);
  • Exceptional attention to detail; and
  • Strong customer-service and collaboration skills.
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate will be organized, self-motivated, collaborative, and have the ability to work independently on a wide variety of tasks;
  • Current (or expired) professional Human Resources certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) or successful completion of SHRM Continuing/Professional Education courses;
  • Experience performing outreach activities (e.g. presentations, facilitating meetings, and leading focus groups);
  • Experience documenting HR procedures;
  • Experience working with data mining tools such as Microstrategy; and
  • Experience working in a large public institution of higher education.
