Adventist HealthCare's Outpatient Diabetes Education Program provides Diabetes Self-Management Education (accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators) and gestational diabetes education to a diverse patient population. The Outpatient Diabetes Educator provides education one on one and in a group setting.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach diabetes education in an individual and group setting at Shady Grove Medical Center, and on a rotating basis at Washington Adventist Hospital. Teach Pre-diabetes classes and lead cooking classes and/or support groups as needed.
Teach glucometer use to individuals and be familiar with various types of glucometers.
Teach gestational diabetes to individuals as needed
Participate in community health fairs/events as needed
Maintain databases/spreadsheets and report out data as needed
Work closely with the outpatient diabetes education program coordinator, nutrition department and inpatient diabetes educators to coordinate patient care and promote the outpatient diabetes program
Collaborate with referring physicians around patient care
Promote outpatient diabetes program with physician practices
Maintain patient records

Qualified candidates will possess:

Registered Nurse, licensed in the state of Maryland
Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) the state of Maryland, or motivated to become a CDE and eligible to take the certification exam for CDE within 2 years
Three or more years' experience in medical/surgical nursing. Diabetes education/patient education experience preferred
Strong communication and customer service skills
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse clientele
Ability to work in an organized, quick and accurate manner in a busy environment while handling multiple priorities and maintaining regulatory requirements
Ability to build and maintain relationships with all Adventist HealthCare entities
Experienced with computer applications, electronic health records and data processing to include Microsoft Office applications. Proficiency in Power Point is desirable
Willingness and ability to be flexible with schedule to meet program needs
Efficient time management skills
Ability to adjust teaching style to meet diverse needs of clientele

Work Schedule:


This position is PRN. The diabetes educator will teach on an as-needed basis.
