As Assistant Stage Manager for the National Symphony Orchestra: assists the NSO Production Manager and Stage Manager for the NSO” with coordination, scheduling and management of all technical needs of load-ins, load-outs, rehearsals and performances; completes and updates paperwork to reflect actual placement of chairs, risers, percussion and all musical instruments needed for performances and rehearsals. Assists and is the first replacement for the Stage Manager for the NSO in overseeing storage and cartage of all equipment needs for the Orchestra. The Assistant Stage Manager for the NSO will be guaranteed 1,560 hours per year at the Head rate as defined in the CBA between Local #22 and The Kennedy Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

60% Coordinates with the Stage Manager for the NSO and as the Primary replacement becomes the responsible person for; the set-up of all equipment needed for rehearsals and performances presented by the National Symphony Orchestra. Oversee union crews in the set-up, and stage changes required during performances of the NSO. Attend and oversee rehearsals and performances as needed and determined by NSO Production management and the Stage Manager of the NSO.

25% Planning and layout of future performances in conjunction with the Stage Manager for the NSO which include; scheduling and estimating numbers of crew needed to complete set-ups and take-downs, scheduling and estimating numbers of crew needed for running of performances, planning and assessing equipment needs for rehearsals and performances, and advising on procurement methods for such equipment.

10% Organizing NSO-owned equipment in storage rooms so it is easily accessible for NSO musicians to access for rehearsals and assuring the safe storage of the instruments.

5% Assists in coordinating and overseeing safe cartage of equipment and very fragile and expensive musical instruments on tours and off-site events and performances.


  • Thorough working knowledge of all areas of theatrical production and presentation including a minimum of 3-5 years of orchestra or other live performing arts experience.

  • Experience working with Union crew members.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required

  • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Office, and Excel preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, communication and management skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and to prioritize in a multi-task environment is required.

  • Ability to translate artistic and financial concerns of the Kennedy Center while ensuring the successful mounting of productions and presentations is necessary.
