Position Summary: The Director reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering with a dotted line to the Assistant Dean for External Relations in the Clark School of Engineering, and is responsible for development and public relations operations for the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the largest engineering program in the school, larger than other colleges on campus. The positon is responsible for developing and implementing prospect strategies for individuals, corporations and foundations from qualification through cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, and for meeting visit, solicitation and money raised metrics.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record as a successful hands-on fundraiser who is skilled at closing gifs and taking the lead in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gif level individuals, corporations and foundations. This positon will carry its own portfolio of prospects and will be responsible for signature Department events designed to maximize strategic engagement for alumni and friends of the Department. Travel and occasional weekend and evening hours are required.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on, innovative fundraiser with a proven track record in identifying sources of support, creating and implementing prospect strategies that end in successful solicitation, and closing major and principal major gifs at the individual, corporate and foundation levels; will be goal-oriented and experienced in engaging academic and volunteer leadership; and will be skilled at collaborating with a variety of stakeholders.
Development/Advancement (65%) Identify, cultivate, and steward corporate and major individual donors and research sponsors for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Leverage existing corporate, business and alumni relationships to secure external funding and support. Ensure that the Department and faculty are represented to various constituencies, including industry and other potential sponsors. Work closely with the Clark School’s Office of External Relations. Direct alumni and visiting committee activities, corporate recruiter relations, and showcase research opportunities, as well as other opportunities for department advancement.
Development/External Relations (20%) Direct alumni relations and the high-profile visiting committee activities, corporate recruiter relations, and showcase research opportunities, as well as other opportunities for Department advancement.
Oversee and direct public relations and marketing strategies in an effort to advance the reputation and
image of the Department. Maintain close relationships with campus media relations and advancement offices as well as the communications unit within the Clark School. Pursue media exposure, development Department publicity through direct contacts in key UMD offices.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 7 years of successful professional experience in development, marketing and/or sales; or, Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and 5 years related experience. Must have excellent interpersonal, management and organizational skills. Skill in closing gifs. Ability to identify, cultivate and steward
donors, prospects and sponsors. Ability to independently manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferences: Master’s degree preferred. Major in engineering, sciences, corporate communications, public relations or related fields preferred. Experience at a large, complex corporate or academic research institution with an exposure to engineering or sciences preferred.
