Research Assistant 3, LVT Laboratory, Marrow Donor Program - Georgetown University Medical Center

The C.W. Bill Young Department of Defense (DoD) Marrow Donor Program - often called the DoD Marrow Donor Program or Salute to Life - has been in operation since 1991. We work exclusively with military personnel and their dependents, Department of Defense civilian employees, Reservists, and Coast Guard and National Guard members to facilitate marrow and stem cell donations.

The Research Assistant 3 supports Large Volume Testing (LVT) laboratory activities, performs high volume molecular testing, and assists in daily work responsibilities and training of new technicians. Reporting to the Assistant Supervisor, the Research Assistant 3 has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Delivers and restocks supplies and reagents. 
  • Cross trains in procedures for other laboratories. 
  • Performs special maintenance of instruments and equipment; reviews and analyzes typing data.
  • Writes specialized reports as required (e.g., sole source documents, SOPs, and deviation reports).
  • Performs high volume molecular HLA Class I & II typing, and performs specialized typing as required (i.e., re-do samples).
  • Maintains and ensures accurate test records in appropriate databases.
  • Executes required equipment maintenance and calibration.
  • Performs quality control testing, and evaluates and reviews typing results.
  • Assists in testing new procedures and new typing techniques.
  • Complies with all requirements necessary to meet laboratory, ASHI, and HIPAA standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science or health related field - preference for Master's degree (or equivalent years of work experience)
  • 1-2 years in clinical lab setting
  • Good computer skills and advanced organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills  
  • Ability to work with colleagues and donors of diverse backgrounds
  • Attention to detail
