FACILITIES MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (PART-TIME)

The Facilities Operations Bureau (FOB) in the Department of Human Services is hiring a part-time (20hrs/week) Facilities Maintenance Mechanic. The FOB manages 13 buildings throughout the County and this employee will perform a full range of basic to technical maintenance tasks in all DHS buildings to ensure the prompt and efficient maintenance of facilities. This employee will also assist in the care of the county vehicle pool and provide daily support to the conference center.

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic is part of a team which provides back-up support to other team members on a daily basis. Work is often re-prioritized due to customer needs and the incumbent should be flexible to work efficiently and effectively. Work involves traveling to various facilities to perform tasks and complete projects, which often require using tools and lifting furniture or boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.

Duties include:

  • Drywall repair;
  • Painting;
  • Carpet tile replacement;
  • Carpentry;
  • Picture hanging;
  • Furniture installation and repairs;
  • Inspecting vehicle and dropping cars off for oil changes and repairs;
  • Tracking keys and availability for vehicle reservations;
  • Ensuring schedules are in notice boards, chairs and tables are in place, and conference room cleanup is arranged; and
  • Using online systems to document maintenance requests and track projects.
The employee will interact with staff and clients. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.

Selection Criteria

Minimum: Six months of general facilities maintenance and repair work.

Desirables: Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Patching and painting experience;
  • Significant maintenance experience;
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or other automated systems;
  • Furniture installation or repair experience;
  • Experience using basic construction and repair tools; and
  • Customer service experience.

Special Requirements

Applicant must possess, and maintain throughout the course of employment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment, weighing up to 50 pounds.

Additional Information

Work Location: Primary work location will be 2100 Washington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22204. This position will require travel to other Arlington facilities.

Hours: 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Monday through Friday.
