Housing and Residence Life is currently seeking applications from qualified candidates for the Assistant Director of Residence Life position. Housing and Residence Life (HRL) is a self-supporting auxiliary organization within the University Life unit of George Mason University. HRL serves a highly diverse population of approximately 6,200 students, the majority of which are undergraduates living in over 40 traditional, suite, and apartment-style residence halls in three campuses within the vibrant Northern Virginia area. HRL employs over 170 full-time and graduate staff members and over 350 undergraduate student staff members. The Resident Director position is a 12 month, live in professional staff member responsible for the educational, social, and cultural growth of the individual student and the overall residential living community. The primary responsibilities include initiating, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating efforts in the residential area that will result in student-centered community that supports the academic mission of the university. The Resident Director is responsible for the overall administration and management of their assigned residential areas.

Responsibilities: A Resident Director (RD) at George Mason University fulfills five primary areas within Housing and Residence Life. Responsibilities fall into the categories of staff supervision, community development and programming, student development, administrative duties and departmental responsibilities.

Supervision and Development:

  • Train and support Resident Advisors (RAs), including one Head Resident Advisor (HRA) on an on-going basis to facilitate development of leadership skills and personal and professional development.
  • Educate and hold staff accountable to the following: University policies, Housing and Residence Life policies and staff expectations.
  • Plan and implement staff development to aid the RAs in developing positive team dynamics and a cohesive team unit
  • Support and supervise RAs in their administrative assignments ensuring accuracy, timeliness and completion.
  • Provide opportunities for staff to receive feedback about the quality and effectiveness of their work. Formally evaluate the performance of RAs during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Attend and conduct weekly staff meetings and scheduled one-on-one contact with the RAs.
  • Develop and maintain staff awareness of campus/community issues through training, programming, individual contacts and role modeling.
  • Recruit, interview, evaluate, select, and on-board Resident Advisor candidates during the formal hiring processes year round.
  • Support Living Learning Communities (LLCs) in residential area as needed and assist in the program(s) development.
  • Serve on departmental/divisional committees.
  • May have the opportunity to supervise a graduate student. (Based on experience and placement)
    Community Development and Programming:
  • Implement the residential curriculum within assigned community to address the developmental needs of specific student populations.
  • Facilitate an effective and supportive working relationship with the Neighborhood Council by attending programs and encouraging resident and staff participation.
  • Develop and maintain staff awareness of campus and community issues.
  • Design proactive approaches to engage students in creating community values and engaging in ethical standards such as respect, courtesy, inclusion, appreciation of differences and civility.
  • Coordinate and participate in neighborhood-wide and university-wide events such as Welcome2Mason, Block Parties, Family Weekend, Orientation, Admissions events, and other events as assigned.
  • Engage faculty in community events and overall residential curriculum plan. If working with designated Living Learning Communities, collaborate with LLC coordinators and faculty partners related to community events and initiatives.
  • Support and supervise RAs in their community development efforts through identifying resources, guidance, attendance and feedback.
  • Accurately track community development efforts as outlined by the department.

Student Support and Development:
  • Educate students in areas that support the mission of the university as well as personal growth and academic achievement within the academic community
  • Address incidents of inappropriate behavior using an educational and developmental approach in informal interactions with students.
  • Serve as a hearing officer to effectively resolve cases of student misconduct within an educational and developmental framework.
  • Working within the limits of professional capabilities, assist students who have academic, vocational, and personal concerns. Make appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • Manage situations involving various psychological, emotional, medical or other safety related emergencies or incidents in the residential community.
  • Participate in daily and weekend duty coverage. Staff will be expected to equally share responsibilities associated with duty coverage when classes are not in session and during vacation/holiday periods. Respond and serve as essential personnel during emergency situations and university closures.
  • Actively participate in cultivating an environment that supports the well-being of residential students while managing situations involving various psychological, emotional, medical or other safety related emergencies or incidents in the residential community. Document these interactions in a timely and accurate manner including follow-ups.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with both residents and neighborhood staff that encourages on-going communication, mutual support and respect.
  • Utilize institutional assessment tools regularly as an early detection tool to assist and retain students.

Administrative Duties:
  • Maintain presence in your community to best serve students.
  • Attend and participate in staff development activities as outlined by the department. Attend regularly scheduled departmental and unit meetings.
  • Conduct regular community walkthroughs. Investigate reported damages and implement the damage billing process as necessary and communicate to appropriate personnel.
  • Conduct assigned responsibilities associated with opening and closing the residence halls and other administrative processes related to housing residents.
  • Maintain all appropriate hall documentation related to facilities management and inventory control (i.e., room condition reports).
  • Promote and develop management procedures and practices that preserve and enhance the facilities by conducting equipment and building inventories on a regular basis. Offer recommendations for the purchase of furnishings and equipment, the improvement of housekeeping services, preventative maintenance, vandalism programs and safety measures.
  • Maintain appropriate student conduct records and follow-up with students on assigned sanctions.
  • Maintain accurate budget reports and associated administrative tasks associated with purchasing requirements (i.e. reconciliations, expense tracking, etc.)
  • In conjunction with Environmental Health Safety, assist in the execution of fire drills and health and safety inspections as scheduled by HRL.
  • Complete sections of the end-of-semester reports by designated deadlines.
  • Manage community and roommate agreements for specific buildings, floors, apartments, and/or rooms. Departmental Responsibilities:
  • Actively support and comply with all University policies, HRL regulations and departmental vision and goals.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the residence halls as a live-in professional. Engage in positive, professional interactions with students after business hours to promote community development.
  • Maintain positive relationships with other University departments (i.e., George Mason University Police Department, Student Involvement, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Services, Student Support and Advocacy, Orientation and Family Programs and Services, faculty, etc.).
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of Residence Life staff.
  • Participate in departmental training sessions.
  • Engage in the delivery of a UNIV 332 (RA Leadership Class) with a student staff co-instructor in Fall or Spring semesters.
  • Assist in delivery and facilitation of various courses facilitated through the Community Standards team in conjunction with the sanctioning process for student code of conduct violations.
  • Actively serve and participate in and provide leadership for unit and/or departmental work streams.
  • Support and assist in the implementation of summer projects, including but not limited to summer housing operations, training, annual policy and procedure assessment/review, orientation events, etc.
  • Assist in fulfilling duties of vacant positions within the department.
  • Be an active member of a Residential Neighborhood team.
  • Other duties as assigned by the HRL Leadership team.

Required Qualifications: * Masters Degree or equivalent education and experience. * Demonstrated full-time residence life experience. * Strong administrative and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: * Masters degree in college student personnel or a related field. * Progressive experience with supervision, advising, and crisis management with a focus on student development. * Demonstrated success working in a diverse environment
