  • Must successfully complete a required police Training Academy or equivalent course, e.g. Navy police Officer Academy, a federal or military police academy; or equivalent law enforcement academy.
  • Incumbent must successfully pass an initial, annual or any required OPM, DOD, or Department of Navy mental and emotional stability screening, physical agility test, and physical fitness for duty test.
  • Must qualify for and maintain an emergency vehicle operator endorsement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver?s license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You must meet the qualifications and be certified to carry a firearm. You will need to maintain firearm proficiency.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

    GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Issues citations in violation of law enforcement regulations; 2) Conducts investigations related to critical incidents (i.e., traffic accidents, domestic violence, assaults, child abuse/neglect) in accordance to policies and procedures; 3) Interviews witnesses to gather information about incidents; and 4) Conducts inspections of vehicles to detect the unauthorized removal of classified material, government property, contraband, weapons, explosives or any items detrimental to security.

    GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Apprehending personnel by the use of force or police equipment (i.e., firearms, taser, Oleoresin Capsicum(OS) spray); 2) Preparing police reports concerning incidents and actions taken; and 3) Responding to emergency calls for service while adhering to state and federal laws.
    OR
    Combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirement.

    GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience in administrative, clerical, technical, or military work that involved protecting property, equipment, data, or materials; or that involved making judgements based on the application of directions, rules, regulations, or laws; AND six months of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. General experience must demonstrate knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.

    Combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirement.

    GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience in administrative, clerical, technical, or military work that involved protecting property, equipment, data, or materials; or that involved making judgements based on the application of directions, rules, regulations, or laws.
    OR
    Combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirement.

    Successful completion of a Federal, State, county, or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations, may be substituted for a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience or 6 months of general experience.

    No substitution of education or training may be made for the required specialized experience at GS-6 and above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

    For some grade levels minimum qualifications may be met based on acquired education. The grade levels that may substitute education for experience are listed below:

    GS-05:
    Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position.

    GS-04: Two years of successfully completed study at an accredited school above the high school level with at least 12 semester hours in police administration, police law and evidence, police investigation, criminology, law enforcement, general law, or similar subjects closely related to police work.

    GS-03: One year of successfully completed study at an accredited school above the high school level with at least 6 semester hours of study pertinent to police work.
