Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training program in basic electronics or a related field is required.
Must satisfactorily pass both a written and practical examination with a minimum score of 70 to advance to the next level.
Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of an electronic technician or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years.
Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this job.
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.
Ability to distinguish basic colors for component, wiring and safety identification.
This is rapid transit vehicle maintenance work. An employee in this class is responsible for the inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of rapid transit vehicle electronic systems, subsystems. Components and its related equipment. The work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, electronic theory, the materials, parts, tools, test equipment and operating systems associated with WMATA rail cars and repair facilities.

Employees are assigned elementary electronic maintenance work in a repair facility to gain familiarity with and acquiring skills in repair and inspection of transit vehicles. All important aspects of the work are subject to detailed and specific procedures which the employee follows closely. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is normally reviewed and verified upon completion by a Rail Car Inspection or Shop Supervisor.
Performs repairs, inspections, required adjustments testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, calibration and scheduled maintenance on assigned rail car equipment in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, operation manuals and manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance, troubleshoots and tests all electronic systems, subsystems and components using precision measuring equipment such as multimeters to test for defective electronic equipment; oscilloscopes, signal generators, bridges and diagnostic analyzers to align, adjust and calibrate electronic equipment; and other instruments as required. Uses various computerized diagnostic programs to detect potential failures and defective components.
Observes electronic systems and components in operation to detect potential failures or locate causes of malfunctions. Dismantles devices and removes defective parts. Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements and manufacturer's specifications. Tests and calibrates systems and equipment to ensure proper system operations using test equipment or precision measuring instruments. May design test equipment.
Maintains rail car vehicle components by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective or worn parts, and soldering, calibrating, cleaning, and adjusting assemblies and special parts.
Maintains electronic systems, solid state devices (microprocessors, integrated circuitry, operational amplifiers, SCR's, shift registers and digital/analog converters), power supplies, and logic boards by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective components and calibrating to manufacturer's specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.
Implements Engineering Modification Instructions (EMI's) and Maintenance Service Instructions (MSI's) to rail car electronic systems. Performs new component acceptance testing.
Completes required documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of transit car equipment and related components by using the proper forms, tags or entering data into the Maintenance and Reliability System (MARS); requisitions parts from the supply room.
Attends on the job and formal training classes; assists mechanics in higher classifications in their assignments or provides job specific training to mechanics in lower classifications.
Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies which require movement of trains involved in incidents, accidents or derailments using rerail equipment.
Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.
Works variable shifts, days and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union contract.
Performs all other related duties as required.
