The George Mason University, Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences in the College of Science invites applications for a full-time, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2019. Responsibilities: We seek a dynamic person with broad expertise in the areas of tectonics and structural geology. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a vigorous, externally-funded research program, aspire to teaching excellence, and engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Candidates with interests in field-based research and interdisciplinary collaborations are particularly desirable.

The successful candidate will perform research in their area of expertise and be encouraged to forge research ties with other parts of the Mason community. Excellent opportunities also exist for collaborations with the U.S. Geological Survey, Carnegie Institute of Science, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Teaching will be primarily at the undergraduate level, including courses in structural geology, tectonics, and physical geology. The candidate may be required to teach graduate classes in area of expertise, including graduate seminars.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Ph.D. in earth science, geology, or a related field prior to the first day of the appointment;
  • Experience in teaching lecture and laboratory courses at the graduate and undergraduate level and a graduate seminar in their area of expertise;
  • The ability to communicate scientific knowledge to a range of stakeholders, including undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, administrators, and the general public;
  • The ability to collaborate with other colleagues in teaching and outreach; and
  • Share the departments commitment to interdisciplinary education. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates with interests in interdisciplinary collaborations and field-based research are particularly desirable.

About Us: The Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Geology, Earth Science and Atmospheric Science, an M.S. in Earth Systems Science, and a Ph.D. in Climate Dynamics.
