Director of Business Operations, Georgetown Climate Center - Georgetown University Law Center

The nonpartisan Georgetown Climate Center seeks to advance effective climate and energy policies in the United States and serves as a resource to state and local communities that are working to cut carbon pollution and prepare for climate change.

The Director of Business Operations is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all of the Center's financial and administrative activities. S/he provides strategic leadership and direction to all aspects of GCC's business operations, including human resource management, financial management, operations, and strategic planning. Duties include but are not limited to:

Financial Management and Grants Management 

  • Directs and manages fiscal operations including budgeting activities, procurement, payroll, and analytics.
  • Leads the strategic development of complex financial planning, budgeting, and analysis by implementing innovative systems and best practices.
  • Collaboratively maintains a robust financial reporting framework for the Center to support proper financial oversight.
  • Manages the annual fiscal close for the department.
  • Oversees a diverse portfolio of grants, ensuring compliance with University, federal, and sponsor guidelines.
  • Manages all pre-award and post-award functions for GCC, including budget development, grant submission, monitoring expenses, report submission, and grant closeout.
  • Meets regularly with Executive Director and other Principal Investigators to discuss financial status of grants and contracts.
  • Serves as Cost Center Manager for the department.
  • As the designated Department Financial Manager for Sponsored Project, has responsibility for financial management of the sponsored project to ensure compliance with sponsor's requirements and University's policies and procedures.


  • Directs all administrative functions, including managing GCC resources, developing and implementing procedures and controls, organizing and compiling reports, and managing day-to-day operations of the Center.
  • Identifies and resolves complex administrative and financial issues that impact the Center.
  • Represents GCC within the Law Center community on all financial and/or administrative matters.
  • Works collaboratively with multiple departments, including Law Center Financial Affairs, Office of Research Services (ORS), and Sponsored Projects Financial Operations (SPFO), and Office of Development.

Strategic Planning

  • Works closely with GCC Executive Director, Faculty Director and other Directors on strategic vision and planning for the Center at weekly Directors' meetings, retreats, etc.
  • Develops long-term budgets with input from Executive Director and other Center leadership in line with strategic goals.

Contracts Management

  • Leads and supervises the contracts process by ensuring compliance with Georgetown policies and procedures for outside vendors, including travel and entertainment, independent contractors, and consulting firms.
  • Negotiates payment terms with external consultants and vendors for new contracts and amendments.
  • Works collaboratively with GCC Executive Director and other Directors to ensure scope of work is accurately defined and aligns with the outcome(s) of project.


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Accounting or Finance - Master's degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • 7 to 10 years of financial experience
  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • Experience utilizing Georgetown Management System (GMS)
  • High level familiarity utilizing Excel
  • Professional level of verbal and written communications skills
