Intern Director and Investigation Supervisor, Criminal Justice Clinic - Georgetown University Law Center

Georgetown Law's Criminal Justice Clinic is a clinical course in which students provide outstanding legal representation to defendants charged with misdemeanors while participating in a rich experiential and classroom learning program.

The Intern Director and Investigation Supervisor oversees every stage of the Internship Program, individually supervises interns' ongoing case investigations, and provides investigation training to other Georgetown Law Clinics and to programs nationwide. Duties include but are not limited to:

Supervision

  • Meets with law students and supervises their investigations daily - providing feedback on statements and interviews, and encouraging them to get better investigative results.
  • Reviews the investigative plans of fellows and law students, providing advice and direct responses to questions and resolving investigative problems.
  • Monitors investigative actions to ensure compliance with ethics and standards of appropriate behavior.
  • Modifies investigative guidelines to reflect changes in strategy and access to information.
  • Oversees the performance of investigation interns throughout the term, providing instruction and establishing guidelines for fellows working with investigative interns, delegating responsibilities to investigators and resolving problems between investigators and fellows.
  • Completes performance evaluations.

Administration of Intern Investigation Program

  • Recruits and hires interns and executes the internship program.
  • Creates relationships with all undergraduate colleges.
  • Develops and disseminates internship descriptions and application materials.
  • Maintains listings in internship publications
  • Negotiates credit arrangements with academic supervisors and departments, reviewing applications.
  • Establishes qualifications and criteria for selection, interviewing candidates and selecting interns. Also, establishes individual internship plans for interns to receive credit and formalizing such plans.
  • Creates and maintains records, responding to requests for information and to inquiries about current and former interns, writing final evaluations and recommendations.

Teaching

  • Develops training syllabus and materials for investigative training provided to fellows and students.
  • Develops materials for training law students in investigation; teaching investigation in law student/ fellow orientation
  • Provides on going investigative training as needed.
  • Conducts training each term for investigative interns, and conducts additional training each week in advanced instigative skills.
  • Researches changes to criminal defense investigation and update the manuals.

Training

  • Trains other public defender and clinical law school programs on defense investigation.
  • Provides updated defense investigation techniques and manuals and help support other intern investigation programs, furthering Georgetown Law policies on academic excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years of criminal defense investigation experience
  • Comprehensive grasp of defense investigation basics, social media investigation, background checks, and interviewing techniques
  • Knowledge of program implantation and supervision
