  • To qualify for a Secretary (Office Automation), your resume and supporting documentation must support:
    A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-08 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. To qualify at the GS-09 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Creditable specialized experience includes:
    • GS-08: Coordinating the work of the office with the work of subordinate offices and recognizing the need for such coordination in order to respond in a timely manner to inquiries received by telephone, in person or in writing from the staff. Obtaining and assembling information on various talks, reports, briefings, and conferences.
    • GS-09: Advising and instructing secretarial, administrative, and professional personnel concerning the reporting and administrative procedures of an agency. Analyzing complex inquiries. Utilizing judgement to select appropriate regulations or precedent decisions. Skill in communicating complex details clearly, either orally or in writing. Identifying needs for office procedures; devising, and installing such procedures.

    B. Typing Proficiency Requirement: Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.


    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
