Department Marketing Statement:

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Office of Engineering and Architecture (ENGA), is seeking a highly-organized and technically proficient Architect, experienced in administrative office workplace programming, space planning and design, with a focus on interior architecture.  The Architect will be responsible for developing conceptual design and contract document packages, including office furniture planning and specifications, using AutoCAD 2017.  The Architect will also be responsible for reviewing architectural designs for building, life safety and accessibility code compliance.  Knowledge of Revit and FM Interact software is a plus. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or a related field.  A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design and detailing on complex commercial or governmental projects using AutoCAD version 14 or higher or equivalent CAD systems; drawings/plans review and analysis; contract document production and coordination; building and safety code analysis; and field inspections.

Or, an equivalent combination of post high school education in architecture or a related field, and more than eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design and detailing on complex commercial or governmental projects using AutoCAD version 14 or higher or equivalent CAD systems; drawings/plans review and analysis; contract document production and coordination; building and safety code analysis; and field inspections.

Job Summary/Duties:

This professional architecture position is responsible for development and production of construction documents using AutoCAD v14 or higher.  The position plans, directs, and supervises the architectural components of reports, designs, or construction projects, and is responsible for finished plans, specifications, or approval of materials.  Initiates and creates project designs and plans including preparation of presentation and design drawings using freehand or CAD methods.  Performs complex or novel assignments that require developing new or improved techniques and procedures.  Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of a small staff of architects and technicians.  Routinely informs supervisor of all project activities.

Serves as project team leader for production of construction documents.  Project management duties include small in-house projects coordinating with other WMATA departments, documenting work and directing in-house engineers.  Develops and produces construction documents using AutoCAD v14 or higher.  Plans, directs and supervises the architectural production of construction drawings using CAD for in-house projects. Monitors the work schedule and budget. Provides technical mentoring for junior professional staff.

Develops and prepares presentation drawings for planning, schematic studies, preliminary designs, reports and required drawing submittals using freehand drawing and CAD techniques.  Develops designs that comply with applicable codes and regulations, and WMATA’s standard design criteria.

Coordinates, reviews, and monitors construction estimates on selected projects. 

Coordinates with local jurisdictional building departments to obtain building permits for WMATA projects as required.

Reviews architectural general plans for compliance with pertinent standards and codes.

Keeps abreast of local and national building and safety codes relating to the design of transit facilities.

Updates and revises the Authority's Standard Architectural Details and Directive Drawings using both CAD and manual drafting.

Performs timely and accurate reviews of construction documents produced by section designers to ensure compliance with approved general plans, Authority standards and applicable codes.

Reviews contractors' shop drawings for compliance with contract drawings and specifications.  Coordinates with other disciplines as necessary.

Performs job-site inspections ranging from approval of initial prototypes and samples to final inspection and acceptance of Metrorail and Metrobus facilities construction and Capital Improvement Projects.

Investigates and analyzes field problems in the areas of building design, accessibility and safety.  Devises solutions and prepares recommendations to correct problems.

Attends meetings with engineering, construction, and operational staff to formulate responses to problem statements and to review construction change orders.

Attends field meetings and coordinates with resident engineers to verify compliance with contract documents.

Attends scheduled meetings with jurisdictional committees, agencies, and teams on selected projects as a representative of the WMATA architectural department and Manager of Architecture.

Assists supervisor with day-to-day operations of the Architectural group.

Performs related duties as assigned.
