WATER/SEWER/STREETS TECHNICIAN II/III/IV (MULTIPLE VACANCIES)
Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services has multiple vacancies in the Water Section of the Water/Sewer/Streets Bureau. These Water/Sewer/Streets (WSS) Technicians provide preventative maintenance, Installation, Inspection, repair, restoration, and customer service assistance as a member of one work teams for the county's water systems. In addition, one of the vacancies will support the Water Control Center in a customer service and trades-focused position.
General duties and area of availability for vacancies include:
Water Control Center
- Team/customer interaction (written and/or verbal);
- Dispatching of crew members;
- Water system maintenance;
- Road service and daily inspection of facilities; and
- Logging in data and completed work in computerized system.
- General system maintenance;
- Meter Installation;
- Valve Inspection; and
- Fire Hydrant Inspection.
- Water main repair and maintenance;
- Hydrant Repairs;
- Valve repairs
- Service Installations; and
- Restorations - Asphalt/Concrete/Seed-Straw.
All positions require the following to be successful:
- Interacting and communicating with team members and County customers;
- Using computerized maintenance record systems to track work and maintenance;
- Providing technical expertise and training for new team members;
- Availability to work emergencies as needed such as during snow events and water main breaks; and
- Consulting with the supervisor or team lead at the start of each day to receive specific team related work instructions, and providing updates and progress of work completed at the end of each day.
Minimum: This recruitment may be used to fill other comparable vacancies within the Department of Environmental Services.
WSS Technician II:
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to learn how to operate hand and power tools, work outdoors in all types of weather; and follow basic verbal/written instructions. Typically, this is obtained through a combination of a High School Diploma or GED, and/or training related to the position.
WSS Technician III:
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to operate hand and power tools, work outdoors in all types of weather, and follow verbal/written instructions, plus six months of experience in construction, repair, or maintenance of water mains or related water, sewer, or street systems at the WSS Tech II level. Requires possession of valid class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license (CDL). Some vacancies may not require a CDL.
WSS Technician IV:
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to operate hand and power tools, work outdoors in all types of weather, and follow verbal/written instructions, plus two years of experience in construction, repair, or maintenance of water mains or related water, sewer, or street systems at the WSS Tech III level. Requires possession of valid class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license (CDL). Some vacancies may not require a CDL. .
Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- Possession of a valid class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license from applicant's place of residence at time of application;
- Related experience in construction operations or in one or more technical areas of water, sewer, or streets operations; and/or
- Basic computer experience using Microsoft Office or related software to document completion of work.
The applicant must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards. Other positions for which this recruitment may be used to fill, may require a valid CDL with or without endorsements at time of application or within a specified timeframe normally not to exceed up to one year from hire date.
Applicants must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employers information required by Department of Transportation (DOT) agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information.
Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.
This position requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which includes attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.
Work is generally performed outdoors and in all types of weather conditions and often near moving traffic. Some work may be performed indoors depending upon the work assignment. The work environment includes exposure to draft, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting light to heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Work Hours: Normal work hours for these vacancies are 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work hours for vacancies in the Water Control Center or in water maintenance section include a varied shift schedule that includes weekends, holidays, evenings and nights as necessary to provide coverage for 24-hour operations. Shift A: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Shift B: 4:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.; Shift C: 12 midnight - 8:00 a.m. Shift hours are subject to change based on departmental need. Shift premium is paid for Shift C, two (2) days during the week. All positions require occasional overtime and availability for call-back in emergency situations.
The salary range at the top of this job announcement is listed from entry level for WSS Technician II to the maximum level for WSS Technician IV.
The salary range for each level is as follows:
- WSS Technician II: $31,782.40 - $48,526.00/annually;
- WSS Technician III: $35,464.00 - $54,184.00/annually;
- WSS Technician IV: $39,020.80 - $59,633.60/annually.
