The general responsibilities of the Technology Development Branch (TDB) Locks Technician are to identify, evaluate, and approve locks and lock systems (including key control/key management) in accordance with the process outlined below under Day-to-Day Duties and Responsibilities. The technician also provides additional high-level lock maintenance and troubleshooting support to diplomatic security field elements. The technician additionally provides lock support, performs minor repairs, re-keying and conducts technical assistance on GSA-approved combination locks, containers and vault doors. The technician is furthermore responsible to inspect new containers, set shipping combinations, and coordinate shipment and installation. The technician is also called upon to research, evaluate, and present recommendations for new locking hardware and systems to include IP-based products suitable for Technical Security Systems (TSS) applications. Day-to-Day Duties and Responsibilities.This position is one of two Lock Technicians within TDB on a team of four lock and container security professionals. TDB in general is a research and development group that identifies, evaluates, and recommends commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom solutions to be included in the DoS suite of technical security systems. The team is led by a senior Government subject matter expert who develops overall program scope, responsibilities, objectives, and deliverables. The Government SME is supported by a Personal Services Contractor (PSC) subject matter expert who provides added technical guidance and capability to the team. The two Lock Security Repair Technicians provide the day-to-day lock and container technical support to the field consisting of about 300 posts and embassies located primarily overseas; but not exclusively. They are in constant contact with field staff and Department of State (DoS) stakeholders providing timely responses to questions, work orders, and other project needs. Very strong customer service and courtesy skills are required as is an ongoing thirst for developing stronger and more relevant technical skills.Lock Security Repair Technicians are expected to understand, document and support every aspect of the Technology Development Branch's Technical Security Systems (TSS) engineering process as it pertains to GSA approved locks and containers, FE/BR locks, door hardware, keys and key control systems.
