Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
GS-0807: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors or higher degree that included a major field of study in landscape architecture or landscape design.
Combination of education and experience - for each year short of graduation, the applicant must have had 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. This experience must have included original landscape design.
In addition to the basic requirements above, the following additional education and/or experience must be met to qualify.
GS-11: Applicants must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (in landscape architecture or landscape design); OR one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).
Specialized experience is defined as experience that has supported natural resource management activities by making observations, gathering data and reporting findings related to scenery management; landscape planning and design; interpretive planning; dispersed and developed recreation; special uses; and scenic byways. Conducted landscape architecture-related research, methodology and analysis. Information was used in environmental assessments, environmental impact statements and/or other natural resource planning or program documents. Assisted in the review process and helped to identify regulatory compliance issues and requirements by analyzing environmental data. Provided input and recommendations regarding recreation and scenery management activities during environmental resource project planning to ensure compliance with federal law, regulation, and policy.
