Occupational Safety Officer

The George Mason University Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS)—within the department of Safety, Emergency, and Enterprise Risk Management is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for the Occupational Safety Officer position. This position will work collaboratively with the EHS team and university departments to maintain and apply existing safety programs, identify accident and incident trends, and recommend safety strategies in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and university safety requirements. This position will oversee the following institutional safety programs; Accident and Incident, Lockout/Tagout, Fall Protection, Arc Flash, and Job Safety Analysis.

Required Qualifications: * Demonstrated progressively responsible experience in the occupational health and safety field; * Ability to work independently, under pressure, with strong problem-solving skills; * Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects simultaneously; * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and writing); * Strong organizational and time management skills; * Ability to meet inflexible deadlines on own initiative; * Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (must be insurable); * Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and guidelines; * Ability to develop, implement and maintain applicable safety programs; * Ability to conduct applicable safety training to a diverse audience; * Ability to conduct a thorough safety inspection; * Knowledge and function of safety equipment (i.e., personal protective equipment, fall protection, lockout devices); * Knowledge of job safety analysis, art safety, theater safety, and shock and arc flash safety requirements * Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects; * Ability to use a computer fluently, including Microsoft Office software; * Ability to manage hourly wage employees, if necessary; * Physical ability to perform duties while wearing required respiratory equipment (must pass required medical exam); and must be able to crawl, bend, climb ladders, independently and safely move approximately 40 pounds, etc.; and * Ability to receive required vaccinations for access to research facilities. Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health or cognizant, directly related science, engineering, environmental or public health discipline; * Experience at an institution of higher education; * Experience conducting accident/incident investigations; * Certification in CPR/First Aid; and * Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) preferred
