Through a merger of its two non-profit entities, the Dream Foundation (Foundation) and Youth Baseball Academy (Academy), the Washington Nationals plan to expand the scope of its philanthropic work, bringing positive change to residents of the DC Metro Area by teaming up with Nationals fans, businesses, foundations, and civic leaders. In the spirit of 'One Pursuit' we aspire to be a platform for collective action to generate a level of impact that is greater than the sum of its parts. Our activities will include the continued growth of our innovative youth and community development programming at the Academy and ongoing support for outstanding local organizations through grant-making, as well as a new focus on aligning stakeholders and Nationals players to envision, stimulate, coordinate, and invest in community impact. The Foundation is hiring a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee the successful administration of the organization's operations, finances, human resources, legal, and IT functions. Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the Vice President, Foundation and Academy, the COO will also be a thought partner on all critical leadership, operational, and strategic decisions affecting the organization. The ideal candidate will bring proven experience as a senior leader in either the non-profit and/or sports sector with particular strengths in building best practice systems, optimizing operational efficiencies, creating and stewarding a positive organizational culture, and developing creative solutions to achieve strategic objectives., Operations Partner with the Vice President in essential leadership activities and decisions Enhance and lead the infrastructure and communications systems necessary to maintain a highly effective and cohesive organization across various implementation pillars Work closely with the senior team of each pillar to ensure their work aligns and helps to meet the organization's goals Identify best practices - both in and out of the sector - to maximize present-day efficiency and effectiveness of internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities Equip the senior team of each pillar with training and tools to establish and achieve results-focused goals Work with the organization's leadership to define impact goals, ensure systems are in place to achieve those objectives and measure progress toward them, and develop the ability to proactively and consistently report on a "return on philanthropic investment" to internal and external stakeholders Financial Management As a representative of the Foundation, serve as a liaison between the organization's fundraising and program teams and the Nationals Finance Department to ensure clear, concise, and accurate financial records and reporting to internal leadership and the Foundation's Board Work closely, in particular, with programmatic and operational leadership of the Academy to ensure its unique financial management and grant reporting needs are met Oversee the annual budgeting process for the organization, including coordination with the Academy team and leading the process for every other pillar Work with team members overseeing grant procurement and fulfillment, as well as Finance team, to provide budgets for grant proposals and reports Work with Foundation Board to build an investments and reserves policy and then make and monitor investments to ensure compliance with investment reserve policies In partnership with Finance team, ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations Human Resources Working closely with the Nationals' HR department, lead the development and implementation of systems that support the performance, professional development, and evaluation of organization staff Will also work closely with leadership of the Academy to supports its semi-autonomous organizational structure Ensure organization employees understand and are supported to know employee benefits plans Lead the recruitment and onboarding of new employees and contractors for the Foundation and work closely with Academy leadership to support their process in doing the same Ensure compliance with federal, state and local non-profit and employment regulations Information Technology and Legal Serve as primary liaison for the Foundation on organizational support functions, including IT and shared services, such as Grants Management and Special Projects Management Support IT team in developing and leading new initiatives and maintaining existing systems Ensure legal and regulatory compliance and appropriate risk mitigation through the timely review and approval of all of the organization's contracts and agreements Passionate commitment to and alignment with the missions of the Nationals Dream Foundation, the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, and the expanded scope envisioned post-merger Minimum of 10 years' experience in an executive leadership role; non-profit and/or sports experience a plus Experience developing and executing strategic and growth plans Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems A flexible, entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving; excellent analytic skills to support strategic decision-making A proven record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization Experience in developing and coaching staff to achieve a positive workplace culture Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication skills Strong writing and public speaking skills and experience Experience interfacing with VIPs, eg. Elected Officials, celebrities, leaders of Fortune 500 companies, etc.
