Biology Lab Tech and Administrator
Position Summary Information Basic Function Performs a variety of basic and advanced laboratory procedures in support of instruction, troubleshoots experiments, orders and maintains inventory, and supervises part-time student workers. Places orders, setup and take down labs, uses and properly maintain lab equipment. Maintain and enforce lab safety policies. Provide equipment training to other lab staff and faculty if needed. Repairs small lab equipment and identifies vendors to service other equipment as needed. Creates lab staff work schedule in coordination with class offering. Other duties as assigned. Duties and Responsibilities Prepare reagents, solutions, substrates, microbial cultures, etc. to support instruction using basic and advanced lab procedures. Maintain a clean and organized lab, set up and take down labs for classes, and serve as the department lab safety lead. Collaborate with department members and order supplies/equipment within budget guidelines. Maintain inventory system. Operate and maintain equipment, including scheduling equipment maintenance and repair. Troubleshoot experiments and perform small equipment repair as needed. Align lab staff schedules with course offerings each semester. Supervise student workers and provide training to other lab staff and faculty, if needed. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelors Degree in a Science field with some experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Preferred Qualifications Masters in Science or related field. Experience working in a lab in an undergraduate academic environment. Research and or industry lab experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of structure and function of laboratory equipment. Fundamental scientific knowledge of biology (cell biology, microbiology, biotechnology, genetics, environmental science, etc.). Knowledge of the use and maintenance of basic laboratory equipment. Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques, including solution chemistry. Skilled in performing laboratory science calculations. Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations. Computer literacy and competency with basic software function. Ability to complete orders, and maintain a budget and inventory records. Outstanding organizational skills. Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
