Executive Director for the NOVA Foundation
Position Summary Information Basic Function Northern Virginia Community College seeks a proactive, self-starter, and goal-oriented development professional to serve as the Executive Director for the NOVA Foundation. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced fundraising professional who wants a leadership role in building and advancing the philanthropic culture of a robust community college through strategically coordinated development, engagement, and fundraising initiatives. The Executive Director will have the opportunity to collaborate with a seasoned Vice President of Advancement who has extensive development experience, to build the philanthropy program at NOVA. Duties and Responsibilities Fundraising: *Develops and implements annual and long-term fundraising plans to generate philanthropic support for priorities identified by NOVA. Monitors and reports progress against goal achievement to NOVA leaders and NVCCEF Board Members. *Effectively communicates NOVA's case for philanthropic support internally and to stakeholders, prospects, donors and the community. *Engages NOVA leaders and staff, NVCCEF Board Members, other volunteers and community stakeholders in building the philanthropic prospect pipeline. *Plans and executes NVCCEF events and effectively utilizes other NOVA and community events to increase prospect engagement. *Conducts regular prospect meetings with NOVA's President, VP for Institutional Advancement, VP for Workforce Development and other leaders to ensure coordinated and effective outreach and relationship management. *Secures significant philanthropic support through the effective management of portfolio of prospects (individuals, corporations, foundations) with the ability to make commitments of $50,000+. *Effectively engages NOVA leaders, faculty/staff, board members and other volunteers in the fundraising process to maximize giving. *Designs and implements effective annual fundraising programs to maximize support from NOVA alumni and faculty/staff. *Designs and implements an effective planned giving program. *Develops and implements a donor-centric strategy to ensure effective donor acknowledgement, recognition and gift stewardship including working with appropriate NOVA staff to administer and award philanthropically funded student scholarships. *Establishes fundraising expectations for all staff members, develops performance metrics, and regularly tracks progress toward goal achievement. Board Relations: *Collaborates with the NVCCEF Board to develop and articulate roles and responsibilities that ensure the fulfillment of the foundation's mission and emphasize philanthropic support and active participation in the fundraising process. *Assists in building and maintaining a highly effective and robust board by articulating a balanced board profile, identifying needed skills and characteristics, and serving as the primary resource for nominees. *Ensures the NVCCEF Board fulfills its fiduciary and governance responsibilities through submission of plans, relevant policies and budgets for approval and circulation of regular and accurate reports regarding NVCCEF's financial position and progress toward achievement of goals. *Schedules and coordinates NVCCEF Board meetings to promote active participation and ownership of goals and objectives. *Ensures the NVCCEF Board and all sub-committees are properly staffed. *Provides tools and educational opportunities to increase the effective participation of board members in the fundraising process. This would include implementing effective board orientation and ongoing board member education. *Effectively communicates with the board as a whole and with individual members when appropriate to ensure effective functioning and informed decision-making and promote and sustain engagement. *Ensures the annual solicitation of all board members, securing commitments that appropriately reflect propensity to give (ability + interest) and achieving 100% participation in giving. *Facilitates the dissemination of official NVCCEF communications and execution of legal documents. Foundation Administration: *Develops long-range strategies to ensure fulfillment of the NVCCEF mission. *Develops and administers the NVCCEF budget exercising proper fiscal management to promote maximum resource utilization and ensure a positive financial position. *Develops a long-term staffing plan that maximizes return-on-investment and promotes retention through clear professional growth opportunities. *Effectively builds and manages a cohesive, productive and accountable staff. *Develops appropriate policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations for a supporting foundation and maintains all official records. *Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy of financial information and oversees external service providers in conducting annual audits and preparing tax returns. *Ensures collaboration between the Office of Grants and Sponsored programs and appropriate mechanisms for *Implements technology effectively, including the fundraising database, to maximize efficiency and ensure information integrity, management and accessibility. *In collaboration with the VP for Institutional Advancement, develop staffing plan. Institutional Advancement: *Serves as a member of Institutional Advancement collaborating on the enhancement of the college's brand and image and promoting the value of a NOVA education by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations. *Work closely with NOVA's Vice President for Advancement and other senior staff in the identification of fundraising initiatives. *Serves as the NVCCEF's primary spokesperson to the organization's constituents, the media and the general public. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or related field or combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications *CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) credential. *Advanced Degree in related field. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities *Proven track record of successful solicitation of philanthropic commitments of $50,000+. *Demonstrated ability to create and execute annual and long-term fundraising plans. *Ability to understand, embrace and articulate the case for philanthropically supporting a community college. *Relevant experience in board development and engagement in the fundraising process. *Ability to promote collaboration, teamwork, and partnerships with internal and external constituents. *Proven success coaching fundraising staff to the highest levels of performance, while promoting a positive, healthy work climate. *Understanding of various gift instruments, estate planning, trust administration, gift planning strategies, and related tax laws. *Experience developing and implementing fundraising events. *Experience with budget planning and administration *Solid judgment, strategic thinking, mentoring and leadership abilities and well-developed organizational skills. *Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills *Strong technical abilities with strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Raiser's Edge Fundraising Database.
