The Fairfax County Attorney's Office has an Assistant County Attorney V opening in each of the following sections:
  • General Law
  • Land Use
  • Personnel
Attorneys in these positions represent Fairfax County, the Board of Supervisors, the County Executive, and County agencies (including department heads, division directors, and other employees), and do related subject matter work as required. Under general direction, the attorneys are expected to personally handle litigation in state and federal court and before state administrative agencies.

The subject areas responsibilities that may be assigned to attorneys within:

General Law Section include: County government powers and procedures and specialized subject matter areas such as:
  • Erroneous tax assessment
  • Bankruptcy
  • Utility rate regulation cases
  • Procurement
  • Legislative changes at the state and local levels
Land Use Section
  • Provides legal advice and represents the County in litigation in areas such as:
  • Land use
  • Zoning
  • Environmental law
  • Local government law
Personnel Section
  • Represent the County and its employees in litigation in federal and state courts
  • Represent the County in Workers' Compensation Commission cases
  • Represent the County in Virginia Employment Commission cases
  • Represent the County in employee grievances

NOTE: Applications will be forwarded to the hiring department weekly. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to four years of experience in the practice of civil law in the employ of a municipal or county government, or acceptable equivalent experience. Litigation experience. Must be an active member in good standing in the Virginia State Bar.

Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Virginia.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer. Selected applicant will be required to complete a Statement of Economic Interest form prior to starting work.

Demonstrated litigation experience. Excellent research, writing and public speaking skills.

Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Physical requirements can be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
