Tax Law Associate
Stein Sperling has an immediate opening for an Associate Attorney in our Rockville, Maryland office to join the firm’s growing Tax Practice Group. This position will participate in all facets of tax law including becoming a key contributor in the Tax Group’s large tax controversy practice as well as having an opportunity to assist the Tax and Business Practice Groups in connection with transactional tax matters. This is an outstanding opportunity for a candidate to expand their legal knowledge and practical experience while working alongside a nationally recognized and diverse group of Maryland based attorneys. The candidate will work closely with the Principals of the Tax Practice Group in connection with the group’s tax controversy practice on both the federal and state level, including matters related to examination, appeals, tax court litigation, voluntary disclosures, offshore asset compliance and collection alternatives (negotiating installment agreements and offers in compromise). On the transaction side, this position will work alongside the Principals in the Tax and Business Practice Groups in structuring and negotiating mergers, stock purchase transactions, asset acquisitions, debt and equity financings, employee incentive plans, limited liability company agreements and shareholder agreements. This position demands significant client contact almost immediately and involves research, strategizing, drafting and interacting with others both inside and outside the Firm, including tax authorities.
This position requires an LL.M. in Taxation or a CPA; 2 to 5 years of relevant law firm experience is preferred. Knowledge of, and experience with, federal income tax procedure is preferred along with an in-depth knowledge of subchapters C, K and S of the Internal Revenue Code. Any prior drafting experience is a plus. Applicants must be barred in Maryland or eligible to sit for the Maryland Bar exam.
