Job Description

Our Circulation department is on the lookout for an expert Accounting Specialist. Someone who knows the ins and outs of intricate business accounts. Who knows how to communicate effectively with the independent agents responsible for delivering The Washington Post each and every day. And who can juggle the billing files, statements, security bond transactions, deposits, charges and other pieces of accounting business with skill, responsibility and a whole lot of organizational grace. It's a fast-paced position in a dynamic team whose exciting challenges will put your accounting knowledge and experience to the test.

Responsibilities include:

  • Administer all aspects of our relationship with the independent agents who deliver our newspapers
  • Maintain up-to-date contract and billing files for agents
  • Process data into Office Pay systems, including recurring charges (e.g. health insurance premiums) and cash received
  • Maintain agent circulation and bond accounts, including deposits to, withdrawals from and transfers between the accounts
  • Run daily/monthly financial procedures and maintain appropriate financial controls
  • Maintain integrity of billing files and transmissions
  • Create accurate and complete statements for agents
  • Report revenue/liabilities to financial accounting
  • Process security bond transactions
  • Issue bills to agents
  • Respond promptly to inquiries from agents and Circulation management
  • Process garnishments, court orders and tax levies applicable to your agents (based on advice from our Legal department)
  • Maintain a log of terminated agents and assist Circulation management with reconciling final balances
  • Assist Circulation with annual Rogan updates and process relevant changes to your agent accounts
  • Process agent change forms
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Ability to prioritize to meet deadlines
  • Computer literacy and practical knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Accounting or business degree (desired)
