University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Assistant General Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs. The Assistant General Counsel provides legal advice to UMUC stakeholders (students, faculty, and staff) as supervised by both the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Advising on a broad range of matters including, but not limited to, employment issues, student matters, external administrative complaints, contracts, intellectual property, and privacy laws
- Assisting with the management of the legal compliance function in the Office of Legal Affairs to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations
- Assisting with responding to public records and other document requests, investigation and litigation support and under the supervision of the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel
- Performing other job-related duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, admission to the Maryland Bar or immediate eligibility for admission; three (3) to five (5) years of experience performing legal work; experience advising clients on a variety of matters; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong research and analytical skills; training development and presentation skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; excellent time management skills; a willingness to support other attorneys; and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and effectively build working relationships.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Performing legal work in higher ed, lower ed/K-12, or state or local government.
