Summary of duties:
The successful candidate should expect to join a dynamic Media Relations team that is active in the Washington, DC public policy community. Under the general supervision of the Embassy Spokesperson, the Media Relations Assistant plays an important role in the Embassy’s media relations and public outreach and supports the needs of the Media Team. The position is the central coordinator for incoming press inquiries, contact management, and media clippings compilation and distribution.
The position is also responsible for providing logistical support for media events and administrative support to the Media Relations team. The Embassy is seeking an adaptable individual with the ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment.
Condition of employment (must be met):
- Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check; and
- Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with U.S. protocol directives for foreign missions.
Candidates must demonstrate clearly how they meet the Education and Experience requirements listed below:
English (The ability to work in French would be an asset.)
A degree from an accredited university in a field such as media, communication, public policy or international relations or a related area of study.
- Experience providing support in a high paced office environment in a government or corporate setting;
- Experience conducting basic research and media monitoring;
- Experience processing claims and tracking expenditures, budgets etc.
- Experience organizing the logistics surrounding events and visits, including invitations, tracking guests, organizing event spaces; and
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite Office, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, electronic invitation software, such as Constant Contact, research software, such as Bloomberg, Zoom Info, and social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.
Candidates who meet the Education and Experience requirements will be assessed on the following qualifications. The assessment may be a written test, an interview, an in-basket exercise, a skills test, or any combination of these methods.
- Knowledge of best practices in research;
- Knowledge of event and visit management;
- Knowledge of administrative and financial processes, such as record keeping, expense management, budget tracking, and the preparation of reports;
- Knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite, contact management software, and social media software; and
- Knowledge of the basic structure of Canadian and U.S. Governments.

- Research, analyze and evaluate information effectively;

Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Locally Engaged Staff (LES) in the United States of 37.5 hours per week. The incumbent will be required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends on an as-needed basis. The incumbent may be required to work hours in excess of 37.5 hours some weeks.
