The Academies is seeking a strategic and visionary leader to guide the Gulf Research Program as its Executive Director.   The Gulf Research Program was established in response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, which resulted in the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.  As part of the settlement of the criminal cases against the companies involved, a new program was established at The Academies with the mission of supporting activities to enhance offshore energy system safety, human health, and environmental resources in the Gulf of Mexico region and other U.S. outer continental shelf regions. With responsibility for managing a $500 million fund that will be used over the next quarter century to fulfill this mission through studies, grants, fellowships, and other activities, the Executive Director for the Gulf Research Program will have the unique opportunity to shape a scientifically transformative program that can have a lasting impact on the Gulf of Mexico region.

The Executive Director is responsible for fulfilling the vision, defining the strategic direction, and leading the development of multi-dimensional program for the Gulf Research Program. Successful candidate will be able to demonstrate past successes in:

  • Leading the development, design, and execution of a complex scientific program
  • Developing a successful science outreach strategy with stakeholders and partners that keeps them meaningfully engaged in the mission or objectives, as well as how to share information to new audiences
  • Building and managing a dynamic team that had a direct and significant impact on the mission of an organization or scientific program objectives
  • Promoting positive social change in communities, industries and state and federal government agencies by cultivating collaborative relationships and partnerships

The position reports to the Executive Officer of the National Research Council, and contributes to institutional management and policy development while establishing current and long-range objectives for the Academies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in a related field, or equivalent knowledge
  • Solid understanding of relevant disciplines and the synergies between the natural and social sciences in the context of the Gulf Research Programs' activities
  • At least 15 years in an executive role with experience developing and implementing successful and oversight of programmatic work, with a focus on mission alignment and sustainability  
  • Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Outstanding management and organizational ability

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a complex research, educational, or technical institution
  • Ability to cultivate strong working relationships with others in an institution, external subject matter experts, and stakeholders such as Academy members
  • Previous work experience or community interactions with communities and industries across the Gulf states
  • An understanding of how nonprofit organizations contract with the federal government
