Assistant Director of Development

The George Mason University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is seeking an energetic professional to serve as an Assistant Director of Development. Responsibilities: Together with the Director of Development and members of the team, the Assistant Director of Development will plan and implement a variety of strategies to raise funds from donors. This person will be responsible for obtaining financial support by identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding current donors and identifying new donor prospects. In addition, this person will plan and implement donor relations and fundraising events for donors with the goal of donor engagement and support as well as work with CHSS departments to include donors in department-level events such as public lectures and seminars. This person will also be responsible for the college’s alumni mentoring lunches and serving as a liaison with the college’s alumni chapter. Finally, it will be their responsibility to maintain accurate and timely records using University Advancement data management and reporting systems, follow Mason policies and procedures, maintain files, and provide annual projections. This position reports to the Director of Development of CHSS.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently. The candidate should have a few years of experience as a fundraiser. S/he needs to have confidence to reach out and speak to potential donors in person and on the telephone, excellent communication skills, verbal and written, and a creative approach to involve and solicit donors. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and have the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, multi-faceted, and dynamic organization. Finally, s/he should also have the ability to function as a positive and contributing member of a small team and work collaboratively with Mason’s central advancement office and the CHSS Dean’s office.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and significant experience related to community relations or development in a comprehensive fundraising program or equivalent, ideally in a higher education setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated analytical and fundraising skills with the demonstrated ability to recognize opportunities prioritize them to attain fundraising goals, and report on results.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fund raising principles and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with donors, volunteers and faculty members.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, organizing and managing fundraising campaigns.
