  • Basic Qualifications: The date immediately preceding an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum entry age for original appointment to a position with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) as a law enforcement officer. PLEASE NOTE: a) This requirement does not apply to persons eligible for veterans preference; b) An individual who is 37 years of age or older may be re-employed as a Federal law enforcement officer in the OIG if the individual has had prior coverage under the special Federal law enforcement retirement plan; c) An SF-50, Notification of Personnel Action, must be submitted which shows your current grade and competitive civil service status (if you have been or are a Federal employee). If you are 37 years of age or older and have been previously covered under the special law enforcement retirement plan, please submit an SF-50 which reflects this coverage in addition to your current SF-50.

    Qualifications for the GL-07 Grade Level: Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed above, AND one of the three requirement listed in A, B, C, and D below.
    A. Specialized Experience- One year of specialized experience or equivalent at the GL-5 level assisting in planning and conducting investigations of allegations of suspected violations of criminal statutes.
    B. One full year of graduate level education.
    C. A bachelors degree with superior academic achievement as defined here.
    D. An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education.

    Qualifications for the GL-09 Grade Level: Applicants must meet the basic requirement listed above, AND one of the three requirement listed in A, B, and C below.
    A. Specialized Experience- One year of specialized experience or equivalent at the GL-07 grade level planning and conducting investigations of allegations of suspected violations of criminal statues; interviewing witnesses; and preparing written reports.
    B. Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.
    C. An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education.

    To meet the Recent Graduate Program Eligibility requirements, you must have obtained a qualifying Associates, Bachelor's, Master's, Professional, Doctorate, Vocational or Technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution, within the previous 2 years.

    All Education must be accredited by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.) Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. In no event, however, may the individual's eligibility period extend beyond 6 years from the date on which the individual completed the requirements of an academic course of study.

    Program participants may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements.
    To be eligible for conversion, Recent Graduates must:
    - Complete one continuous year of work experience acquired through a Recent Graduate Program
    - Complete 40 hours of formal interactive training
    - Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Recent Graduate will be converted
    - Meet any agency-specific requirements specified in the Participant's Agreement
    - Demonstrate successful job performance that results in a rating of record of at least Fully Successful and a recommendation for conversion by the first level supervisor.
