Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the nation’s 10th largest school district, located in suburban area just outside the nation’s capital, is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the Division’s Pest Controller II within the Department of Facilities and Transportation Services. This individual leads and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a systemwide buildings and grounds pest control program.
The ideal candidate will possess any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program, plus five years of progressively more responsible pest controller experience, one year of which shall have been at the journey level. Thorough knowledge of the prevention, elimination, and control of household pests and pests that are harmful to building structures, stored materials, and vegetation; thorough knowledge of the habits, physical characteristics, hiding areas, and food sources of a wide variety of pests; skill in recognizing conditions conductive to pest infestation, detecting concealed infestations, and selecting equipment, materials, and methods for specific conditions and results desired; ability to perform the work from planning to completion stages and provide complete coverage without danger to people and domestic or laboratory animals. Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions; ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals; ability to estimate time and material needs, determine when repair is not economically practical, and to perform routine clerical tasks and arithmetical computations; knowledge of basic computer skills; ability to perform journey-level tasks and work with subordinate employees; ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships; and strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Valid driver's license with a good driving record. Possession of a valid 7A (General Pest Certification) and 7B (Wood destroying Pest Certification) from the state of Virginia. May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
