Job Description


The Washington Post is seeking a dynamic commercial Web Developer to join its Digital Advertising Operations department. In this role, you will be responsible for developing high-quality advertising concepts, translating them into internal and external campaigns, and maintaining or enhancing the proprietary ad script. The successful candidate will be able to think outside the box, be well organized, detail-oriented and able to handle deadlines with grace.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with our Ad Product and Engineering team (RED) to develop cutting edge advertising using the modern Javascript programming techniques.
  • Build custom ad executions and HTML5/CSS/JS animations that transform UI/UX designs into technical feasibility
  • Will gain thorough understanding of our platform, database, API, caching layer, proxies, and other web services used in the system
  • Help enhance and maintain tools that support external ad campaigns
  • Maintain advertising javascript code by building reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Fully understand and communicate all aspects of our ad specs, creative templates and ad tags to ensure proper functionality of ad campaign creative elements
  • Perform QA of custom campaign materials prior to launch to ensure materials adhere to ad policies and technical specifications and to verify creative assets will deliver successfully
  • Schedule digital advertising creative materials properly in primary and secondary ad servers
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of ad server capabilities to troubleshoot delivery issues and provide effective solutions to resolve such issues

Requirements include:    

  • 1-2 years experience writing and debugging modern JavaScript (ES6+), CSS (Flexbox/CSS Grid a plus), and HTML5
  • Experience using Javascript libraries such as jQuery and modular tools like require.js
  • Experience using libraries such as React and Node.js a plus
  • Must be able to write self-contained, reusable, and testable modules and components
  • Understanding of asynchronous mechanisms used in modern web development (Promises, Observables, etc)
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as GitHub
  • Ability to write code that is compatible in all major browsers (including IE11+) and performant on mobile devices
  • Knowledge of advertising tech a plus (prebid.js, Doubleclick)
  • Strong sense of responsibility, priority, and ability to meet demanding deadlines
  • Professional and precise communication skills
  • College degree in Computer Science, or equivalent, preferred
